OBITUARIES
William Harold Peterson, Jr.
Thomas Jackson (Jack) Brantley
William Harold Peterson, Jr., age 86, went to be with his
Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at his home
surrounded by his family. He
was born in Vidalia, GA to the
late William Harold Peterson,
Sr. and the late Frances Shumans
Peterson Hudson. He was raised
on his family farm in Montgom
ery County. In 1959, Harold and
his family moved from Vidalia
to Waynesboro. He retired after
39 years of serving as the meat
market manager of Piggly Wig
gly and began his own business,
Peterson’s Pest Control.
Harold was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Waynes
boro, where he was a deacon and a member of the Spares and
Pairs Sunday School Class. Over the years, he sang in the
choir, served as a Sunday School teacher and was involved
in several committees.
Harold loved his community and was involved in many
different organizations throughout his life. He was a charter
member of the Waynesboro Jaycees, member of the Waynes
boro Exchange Club for over 60 years and was a past president
and was a member of the Georgia Field Trail Association. He
was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on July
31,1958 in Vidalia at Lodge No. 330 and in 1959 joined the
Waynesboro Lodge No. 274 and was an active Master Ma
son for over 60 years. Harold was an Alee Shriner with the
Waynesboro Shrine Club since June 14,1975, where he served
as past president twice and was a member of the Shriner Go
Cart Unit. He was a member of the 32 degree Scottish Rite
of Freemasons Valley of Augusta.
In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, studying his Bible,
and gardening. In his younger years, he enjoyed golfing,
hunting, and fishing. Harold will be remembered for his love
for the Lord, love for his family and friends, and for his witty
personality.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Kathleen
Adams Peterson; two daughters, Karen Hunt (Paul) of Doug
las ville, GA and Debbie Register (Alan) of Waynesboro; four
grandchildren, Eric Quick of Waynesboro, Kimberly Diotte
(Matt) of Evans, Megan Vandenbulcke of Waynesboro; and
Mallory Sexton (Patrick) of Arlington, VA; eight great grand
children, Brandon Quick, Cameron Quick, Kelcey Diotte,
Ryleigh Diotte, Aiden Vandenbulcke, Luke Vandenbulcke,
Liam Vandenbulcke, and Amelia Sexton; two brothers, Ray
Peterson (Becki) of Watkins ville, and Jack “Pete” Peterson
of Griffin; brother-in-law, Roger Adams of Vidalia; and many
nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Monday, April 4 at the funeral home. Funeral services were
held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 5 at First Baptist Church in
Waynesboro with Dr. G. A1 Wright, Jr. and Rev. C .A. Register
officiating. Burial followed at Burke Memorial Gardens with
Masonic Rites.
Active pallbearers were Chris Peterson, Craig Adams,
Chuck White, Mike White, Bob Mallard, Rex Gerlinger, and
Billy Oglesby.
Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Waynesboro
Masonic Lodge, Waynesboro Shrine Club, Waynesboro
Exchange Club, and Spares and Pairs Sunday School Class.

He grew up in Charleston.
He received a Bachelor of Arts
Degree from Furman University.
Jack was active in many organi
zations at Furman including the
Furman Singers and was the edi
tor of the 1955 yearbook, Bonhomie. Upon graduation from
Furman in 1955, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army. He
also earned a Masters Degree of Public Administration from
the University of Oklahoma in 1974.
His hrst Army assignment was in Birmingham, Alabama
where he met Martha Jean Deason and they were married on
April 11,1959. A year later, Jack was assigned to Fort Rich
ardson in Anchorage, Alaska. In addition to his Army duties,
he was choir director at Elmendorf Airforce Base and then
director of the Post Chapel choir at Fort Richardson. He was
stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, Fort Benjamin
Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Netherlands and Fort
Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Jack also served in Vietnam.
Jack’s decorations include Nation Defense Service Medal,
Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, RVN
Campaign Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorius Service Medal,
RVN Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
After 23 years of active duty, Jack retired from the Army
and the family moved to Waynesboro, Georgia. He held the
position of City Administrator of Waynesboro, Georgia for
22 years.
Jack was an active member in the Waynesboro community.
One of his greatest joys has always been his love of music.
He was the Music Director at First Baptist Church. He also
organized and directed the Waynesboro Community choir
which performed on many special occasions. He was former
president of the Waynesboro Rotary Club and also president
of the Waynesboro Community Concert Association. He was
a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro,
Georgia and the Spares and Pairs Sunday School class. He
loved his church and his church family. He was a member of
Post 120 American Legion. He was also a regular member
of the Coffee Club where they discussed news of the day and
other important topics.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha Jean; son
John Michael Brantley (Debbie); son Thomas Kevin Brantley;
3 grandchildren, Abbey Brantley Gay (Bobby), Jackson Dea
son Brantley, Jenna Grace Brantley; great grandson Deason
Joseph Gay; and one sister Hazel Rutland and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Jack is preceded in death by his father and mother (Tom
and Mary Brantley); brother (Luther Brantley); brother (T.C.
Brantley); sister (Helen Gunnells); sister (Evelyn Johnson).
Visitation was held on Monday, April 4,2022 from 11a.m.
- 12 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro. The
memorial service was held following visitation at 12 p.m.
with the Reverend Doctor A1 Wright and Reverend Doctor
James D. Jordan. Reverend Jordan and Jack have been good
and faithful friends for 83 years. Burial followed at Burke
Memorial Gardens.

Helen Johnson Bailey
Helen Johnson Bailey of Waynesboro passed away Saturday, April 2,2022. She was bom Janu
ary 13,1937 to the late Lois and Jesse Johnson, Sr. of Hephzibah, GA.
She was married to the late Otis W. Bailey, Sr. for 64 years. She is
survived by four daughters, Linda Mims (Bobby) of Martinez, Virginia
Jenkins of Waynesboro, Cynthia Harbeson (David) of Evans, and
Sharon Pierson (Cole) of Waynesboro; one son, Otis Wesley Bailey,
Jr. (Tonya) of Waynesboro; ten grandchildren, Emily Crawford, Gina
Richardson (Doug), Dr. John Jenkins (Angela), Stoney Turnage
(Sarah), Jeffrey Corley, Jodi Judy (John), Otis “Opie” W. Bailey, III,
Gabe Bailey, Brandon Pierson (Becky), and Kitty Barks (Josh); eleven
great grandchildren; five siblings, Nell Mobley of Waynesboro, Lucile
Cheeks ofEvans, Virginia Mead (Shorty) of Waynesboro, Jimmy John
son (Mary Ann) of Hephzibah, and Richard Johnson of Bay Minette,
AL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death
by a brother, Jesse Johnson, Jr.
Helen was a bookkeeper and worked for Goldberg Furniture, Delta
Termite & Pest Control, and Burke County Animal Hospital. For as
long as she was able, she especially enjoyed cutting grass with her riding lawnmower. She never
met a stranger and welcomed everyone as family. She was happiest when surrounded by people;
children especially brought a smile to her face. Her quick wit and gift of gab kept everyone laugh
ing and on their toes.
Helen was a long-time member of Rosemont Baptist Church in Waynesboro, where she faith
fully served until moving to St. John Towers in Augusta in 2018. Helen had lived for 66 years at
her home in Waynesboro and moved to St. John Towers unsure of how she would like “apartment
living”. But in this community, she thrived because of the many friendships she made. Rumor has
it, her lunch table was the place to be for a good time. The family is very grateful to the staff and
residents for making her years there most enjoyable.
Funeral Services will be held 12:00 noon Thursday, April 7 at Rosemont Baptist Church with
Rev. Keith Alderman and Rev. Mike Flowers officiating. The family will receive friends one hour
prior to the service. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Vision Fund of Rosemont

Thomas Jackson (Jack) Brantley passed away on March
