BCHS Bears and Lady Bears
both earned the opportunity to
play in the first round of the
state playoffs, starting Wednes
day, April 20 at the Burke
County Recreation Depart
ment. They faced off against
Sumter County High School
out of Americus.
The girls started their match
at 9 a.m. and were unfortu
nately swept 0-3.
The boys’ matches were
much more competitive. While
the team lost 2-3, players like
Ethan Coalson and Ryan Mor
ris were able to win each of
their matches with ease. Coal-
son won his sets 6-2 and 6-4
respectively. Likewise, Morris
dominated, winning 6-1 and
6-2.
After losing the last singles
match and the first doubles
match, the fate of the boys’
season rested in the hands of
Jacob Curtis and Shane Davis,
who both played well. Each
had impressive ground strokes
and volleys that sparked the
pair. After tying sets at two a
piece, however, the Sumter
County boys were able to win
3-2, advancing them to the
second round.
It was unfortunate to see such
a promising season come to an
end, but head coaches Daniel
Hance and Laurie Dickey
reflected on their 2022 season
saying, “We are very proud of
both the boys and girls teams.”
Acknowledging the hard work
and daily practices, they said,
“They played hard all season.
Seasons like this always land
hardest on the seniors. To Bears
seniors Kyleigh Egan, Josalyn
Roberts, Arlesia Davis, Ethan
Mooneyham, Jacob Curtis,
Keegan McDonald, and Shane
Davis, we wish you the best
and will miss you next year.”
