St. Michael’s
helps Ukraine
Pam Jesion
As the war in Ukraine con
tinues to dominate interna
tional headlines, humanitarian
relief groups are desperately
working to provide everything
from medical help to emotional
support for children caught up
in conflict to shelter, food and
water for a desperate popula
tion. One American who cur
rently lives in Scotland is doing
what she can to help. Mary Lou
Stilwell is an accomplished
quilter whose work has hung
in museums and has been
valued more than $1,000 for
an individual piece. Needing
to do something to support the
Ukrainian people, Ms. S til well
began making baby quilts to
be donated to refugee moth
ers and their infants who are
being relocated to Scotland
from their homes in Ukraine
for safety. Each quilt is indi
vidually designed and pieced,
using fabrics in the blue and
yellow colors of the Ukrainian
flag. Last week, Ms. Stilwell
donated and shipped one of the
Baby Quilts for Ukraine to St.
Michael’s church in Waynes
boro. It will be raffled off with
all proceeds going to humani
tarian relief groups on May
15. Tickets are $10 each or 10
for $90. They are available at
the church (515 Liberty Street,
Waynesboro) - and from its
members. Lor additional in
formation, please contact the
church at 706-554-3465 or

democracy has suffered from

the people. Many Americans
have accepted the reality that

we have not passed the point
of no return and can right the

Judges
are struggling to pay what is
required of them.
“We are the middle man
between the defendant and the
court,” he said. “I don’t know
that we have ever approached
a judge to give some consid
eration to a probationer and a
judge hasn’t done it.”
Popplewell admitted he has
driven above the posted speed
limit in his lifetime. Still, he
defended the need for some
speeders to be on probation,
especially if they were driving
many miles-per-hour over the
speed limit. He also pointed out
he has no control over what a
judge decides. His company
only supervises, but doesn’t
make the decision of who gets
sentenced to probation. Still,
he said he has personally wit
nessed sentences he thought
were too harsh. Probation
companies get a bad rap be
cause they get blamed for the
conditions the court imposes,
he said.
“There are as many traffic fa
talities for speeding as DUI’s,”
he said. “It’s the court decision

and the legislature that sets the
rules.”
Popplewell said he grew up
in a trailer park in South Caro
lina and could have very easily
found himself on the “other
side of the fence.” His child
hood experience gives him
the ability to empathize with
people placed on probation.
Consequently, he tries to pro
mote that empathy throughout
his company. CSRA Probation
employees receive training that
stresses his core values.
Currently there are less than
300 people sentenced to mis
demeanor probation in Burke
County, Popplewell said. The
pandemic brought a decrease
while courts shut down. How
ever, that could now change.
In addition, the Burke Coun
ty Sheriff’s Office is now pa
trolling Midville. The city will
hold its second court session
with the new municipal judge
April 29. There are currently
36 citations to be addressed,
up from nine last month and
zero before the BCSO began
patrolling.

RED LETTER DAY
I will establish your borders.
Exodus 23:31 (NIV)
Did you celebrate Easter this past week? As Christians,
Easter of all times of the year should be one of great
excitement and joy. Unlike Christmas, it’s not about
giving and receiving presents but rather a renewal of your
commitment to living your life for Christ because He gave
His life for you.
Jesus eagerly desired to sit with his disciples and eat the
Passover meal. Like his Jewish brothers, he knew the
importance of this Red-Letter Day and would not pass over
its significance. God chose the blood of an innocent lamb
without defect as the instrument to deliver His people from
Egyptian slavery.
Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God slain to take away the whole
world's sins. He now sits on the throne of God. As we face
global crises of all kinds this year, may we pray that His
blood would cover us all and bring sweeping reformation
to the United States and the whole world.
The Lord wants to establish your borders this year, so He can
protect and lead you by the still waters to green pastures.
But you must permit Him to do so by surrendering your will
to Him. You can come out of bondage and have a new start
this month. You can rise from the emptiness of this world
to a purposeful and brilliant life! Because Jesus lives, you
can face tomorrow.
