ON TYRANNY
Timothy Snyder authored
a book entitled, On Tyranny:
Twenty Lessons from the Twen
tieth Century.
In rather short sections, he
outlines how democracies have
been undermined. Drawing
upon the fears and concerns
of the Founding Fathers, he
cites experiences in Germany,
Czechoslovakia, and the United
States.
An underlying factor in the
demise of democracies has
been the free turnover of power
to authoritarianism. After the
1932 German election, allow
ing Hitler to form a govern
ment, anticipatory obedience
allowed enough people to vol
untarily extend their services to
the new leader. This acquiesce
opened the door for Hitler to
extend his power and the even
tual attempted extermination of
the Jews.
This same pattern of com
pliance occurred in Czecho
slovakia after the communists
won the elections of 1946.
It was German theologian
and Lutheran pastor Friedrich
Gustav Emil Niemoller who
said, “When the Nazis came
for the communists, I remained
silent; I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social
democrats, I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade
unionists, I did not speak out; I
was not a trade unionist. When
they came for the Jews, I did
not speak out; I was not a Jew.
When they came for me, there
was no one left to speak out.”
These examples seem rather
stark and distant from us today.
However, we can look into the
recent past and see a glimmer
of what happens when enough
people voluntarily support an
autocratic leader. In the 2016
Presidential race, 17 Republi
can candidates threw their hats
in the ring. Thirteen of the
candidates were or had been
elected state or federal officials.
Nine had served as governors
of their state, four were U.S.
Senators, one had been a CEO
of a major corporation, and one
a major medical center’s Direc
tor of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
The seventeenth candidate
served as Chairman and Presi
dent of his own organization.
On the campaign trail, Sena
tor Ted Cruz said that candidate
Trump was a serial philanderer,
a pathological liar, and a narcis
sist. Senator Lindsey Graham
said, “You know how you
make America
great again? Tell
Donald Trump to SEARLES,
go to hell. He’s 8A

ALL IT TAKES
Perhaps because I don’t have
children, I never gave much
thought to the importance of
good mothers.
I took the good mama I had
for granted. Yet, often when I
do things she taught me such
as making biscuits or putting
pieces of broken clay in the
bottom of a pot when I plant
flowers, I remember her teach
ings.
Sometimes, we’d come in
from church and she’d say,
“Let me go in here to the
kitchen and see what I can
throw together to eat.”
I never once knew my mama
to go to the store to buy a miss
ing ingredient for a recipe. She
either substituted ingredients or
made something else.
One time, after I had built a
house practically in her back
yard, she called and said, “I just
got some hot Mexican corn-
bread outta the oven. Come
over here and get some.”
I did a double take at the
phone. Mama was an Appala
chian cook. It never occurred
to me that she had even heard
of Mexican combread.
Oh. My. Goodness. It was the
most delicious stuff I’ve ever
tasted. I ate half the skillet.
“Where did you get this
recipe?”
“I made it up.”
I pressed her. “How did you
know to make it up?”
“I read a newspaper story
about putting com and cheese
in combread so I experiment
ed.”
I walked over to a kitchen
drawer, pulled out a pen and
paper. “We need to write this
down.”
She was reluctant. She was
a free spirit when it came
to cooking but, finally, she
managed to remember what
ingredients she put in but not
the measurements. Those she
happily improvised.
I’ve become that same kind
of cook. I take the basics of
what I know about cooking
then create dishes all the time.
As soon as Tink says, “This is
fantastic!” I ran for pen and
paper. That’s how I wound
up with his favorite spaghetti
recipe of all time.
Thank you, Mama.
She did an even better job
with my sister, who
is known as one of
the best cooks in the
country. She’s in-
