The City of Waynesboro celebrated Georgia Cities Week 2022 with a number of events that
received great citizen support. The city conducted its annual 6th grade “If I were Mayor” creative
writing contest. The three winners were Samuel DeLaigle of Faith Christian Academy, Madi

In recognition of the 150th Anniversary of Tree Planters Holiday and Waynesboro’s Tree City
USA designation, members of the city council, City Manager Valerie Kirkland, Assistant City
Manager Trinetta Skinner and city employees celebrated Arbor Day by planting a tree in the
Sixth Street Park April 29th.
City officials, city employees, local businesses, nonprofits and other community stake holders
cleaned up the streets April 29 while participating in Waynesboro’s Clean and Beautiful Cam
paign. Block by block the city benefited from the goodwill and comradery shown by everyone
picking up trash.

juries required that she exer

in sports for about two years.
She couldn’t participate in
anything that presented any
type of threat of injury to her
head. Gradually, she began to
feel healed enough to have the
confidence to compete again.
Since last year, Payton has won
multiple awards, including
third place in a 200-meter dash
in several relay races.
“She looks like an upside U,”
her dad said of her impressive
high jump form. “It is really
amazing how she can bend her
body, especially after suffering
a brain injury like that.”
The EBA track team fin
ished third overall in the GIS A
AA State track competition.
Payton’s best friend and most
motivating team mate, Braelyn
Reeves, placed second in the
high jump. Jesse gave EBA
track coach Monika Mobley
credit for her role in his daugh
ter’s success. Payton plays bas
ketball under Mobley as well.
He said Mobley is phenomenal
at motivating the students to
reach their potential. However,
Payton also gives the credit to
her parents for continuing to
inspire her to do her best.
“They inspire me to be the
best that I can be and push me,”
she said.
Payton’s dad couldn’t be
prouder. He admits he cried
when she won first place in the
400-meter dash last year.

you don’t expect her to be able

to accomplish those things,”
he said.
Payton said she hopes to
compete at Georgia Southern
University after high school.
In the meantime, she plans to
keep breaking her personal
records by continuing to strive
for her best.
