Do Burke Countians bowl?

Councilman Dick Byne
wants to know if a bowling al
ley would be utilized in Burke
County.
Archway Professional Aaron
Redman updated the City
Council July 18 on how the
UGA partnership is working
to benefit the county.
Redman said there are 3-tiers
of projects in place; workforce
development, intergovernmen
tal collaboration and housing.
“We have put together issue
work groups for both hous
ing and workforce develop
ment,” he said. “The issue
work groups consist of local
stakeholders who have an in
terest in these areas.”
Students from the local
school system and Augus
ta Technical College have
weighed-in on what they want
and need in terms of workforce
development. Local companies
like Ingevity, CMS and Sam
sons Manufacturing Corp.
have also expressed what
they need in terms of em
ployees.
“From that we are obvi
ously looking at better com
munication between young
people and industry here for
jobs and opportunities and as
well as possible training op
portunities through the Burke
County Public Schools CTEA
program and Augusta Tech,”
Redman said and mentioned
the need for more training in
soft skills along with mentor
ships.
Byne questioned Redman re
garding the types of businesses
the city needs to pursue.
“I don’t have any problem
with calling anyone in Cali
fornia with their taxes 10 times
higher than they are in Burke
County,” he said. “If we have
an idea of what company fits
Burke County then I don’t
mind recruiting.”
Byne also questioned the
education and reading level
of the county’s citizens and
statistics on how many em
ployees actually live locally.
In response, Redman pointed
out that the workforce issue
group will be working with the
Development Authority in the
future to help determine how to
recruit more companies to the
area. Additionally, the issue
group has noticed a disconnect
that exists amongst students
regarding what opportunities
exist locally.
“We need to know as much
information as possible about
Burke County,” Byne said. “I
want to know what our favorite
food is. I want to know what we
do as far as activities. Do we
need to bring a bowling alley to
Burke County? Well, if nobody
bowls, that would be stupid.”
Councilman Maurice Mc
Bride pointed out that several
manufacturing companies cur
rently call Burke County home.
He suggested students should
be trained in areas that would
benefit the county in the future.
“We have had really no is
sue filling those positions for
decades,” he said. “If we are
focused on growth, then I think
it would be to our best benefit
to target industries that are not
in existence here.”
In terms of housing, the is
sue group is looking at Geor
gia’s Initiative for Commu
nity Housing (GICH). GICH
is a three-year program that
is jointly administered by the
Georgia Department of Com
munity Affairs and the Univer
sity of Georgia in which five
local governments are chosen
annually through a competitive
application process. Each
participating community
forms a Housing Team
that consists of individuals
from various segments of
the community. Members
of the Housing Team at
tend two facilitated re
treats per year where they
are educated on a variety
of housing issues. They
also develop a work plan
that is actively pursued during
the following six months.
At the same time, Archway
is also looking at homeowners
and buyers education programs
as well as alleviating obstacles
for developers.
September 8 & 9, Archway
is hosting an intergovernmen
tal and collaboration network
ing retreat in Savannah.
“It will include mainly lead
ership training opportunities,”
Redman said and added that
invitees include the city coun
cil members, the Board of
Commissioners, Board of Edu
cation members and mayors.
“ “Do we need to bring
a bowling alley to Burke
County? Well, if nobody
bowls, that would be
stupid.”
