Waynesboro native needs your help
Waynesboro native and for
mer Rotary Club president Val
Crawford is in urgent need of
a liver transplant.
Currently Val is waiting for
transportation to the Mayo
Clinic in Jacksonville, FL,
where she will wait for a life
saving liver transplant.
Val knew that her condi
tion could eventually lead to
liver failure. Her situation
became critical last month as
the disease progressed rap
idly causing numerous serious
complications. After several
hospital stays in Augusta, Val
was placed as urgent on the
transplant list and was trans
ported to the nearest transplant
program, Piedmont Atlanta.
Piedmont referred Val to the
Mayo Clinic because family
support is crucial to the suc
cess of a transplant patient and
Val's sister and her family live
in Jacksonville. Val will need
intensive care both before and
after the procedure.
Transplant-related expenses
are daunting. As a single
woman, Val solely depends
on her ability to work and for
work-related insurance, which
will end soon.
A Gofundme account has
been set up on Facebook and
can be found by searching Val
Crawford.

CORRECTION
In an article last week, Ruby Carter incorrectly stated
that the WG Team holds a nonprofit 501 (C) (3) status,
however she contacted The True Citizen after publi
cation to clarify that the nonprofit is only listed as a
domestic nonprofit with the State and is not registered
as a 501 (C) (3).

your district,” Wren said.
If property owners believe
their value is incorrect, they
have the right to appeal the tax
Vidette
seats specifically so the county
could not take Vidette’s mu
nicipality status away due to
lack of city council members.
For years, all was well until
we asked in February for the
council to hire a city attorney
because we realized Vidette
was not legally in compliance
in any area and could lose its
municipality to Burke County.
This request was met with
great opposition (to date by
some) and some personal ret
ribution. A city attorney was
retained in March and also
with opposition, a competent
certified clerk was contracted
in May. As a result, Vidette has
begun working toward legal
compliance, realized a sum of
assets, opened meetings to citi
zens, and has a bright future.
As long as the city attorney and
certified clerk remain, Vidette
is no longer vulnerable to lose
its municipality status and be
taken over by Burke County. A
safe legal path has been estab
lished and with that being our
goal, we have resigned from
the city council to pursue other
interests.”
The Vidette City Council
originally intended that during
the meeting the council would
meet the requirement of four
council members and a mayor.
Instead, the panel ended right
back where it was last month,
just different people sitting in
the seats, said Dube. The coun
cil is still short two members.
In another twist of events,
Councilwoman Samantha Wil
liams and Councilmen Segrest
and Alley voted for Alley as
mayor and Williams as mayor
pro tern. Municipal Court
Judge E. Gary Beddingfield
Jr. administered all three oaths
of office. Although Williams
assessed value to the Board of
Assessors’ Office. The deadline
to appeal is 45 days from the
date of the Assessment Notice.
was already on the council,
Dube said no previous oath of
office could be located. Dube
also said the length of the terms
was still unclear and would be
determined at a later date.
The panel continued to han
dle their business as the night
moved forward. Dube suggest
ed that Vidette apply for the
State Local Maintenance and
Improvement Grant (LMIG)
to assist in paving or sidewalk
projects. The contracted city
clerk also reported the city re
ceived its first alcohol beverage
check of $33.
A drop box has also been
installed on the City Hall build
ing for water payments. The
panel also agreed to pay in
creased costs to its certified
public accounting firm after
they initially refused to con
duct the city’s annual audit
because of a history of poor
record keeping. The CPA firm
raised the costs from $1200
to $3200. The city council is
holding off on the purchase of
a much-needed computer until
the city hall building has been
secured. There is still no viable
record of citizens’ water bill

accounts.
Near the end of the meeting,
former Mayor Robert Peel
stood up and warned the panel
about applying for grants.
“They will promise you the
moon and they will talk so well
that you just start hearing cash
register sounds,” he said. “Re
member, this is Vidette and no
matter what we are still going
to be a small Southern town.
Be careful about listening to
people about all the money
you can get. Sometimes even
though you can get it, it doesn’t
mean you need it.”
Peel stated numerous times
that he didn’t like to see change
in the city but knew it was nec
essary. After admitting that he
did not handle the city’s busi
ness in an organized fashion
when he was mayor, he com
mended the panel for the most
organized city council meeting
he had ever witnessed.
“I did a lot but I was not
well organized with the paper
work,” he said. Even so,before
he left the meeting, he stated he
might consider filling a vacant
seat on the panel.
