Life Lines
By Linda Lariscey
PREGNANT WITH A PROMISE
God is not a man, that he should lie, nor
a human being, that he should change his
mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or
has he spoken, and will he not make it hap
pen? Numbers 23:19 (NET)
We have a good heavenly Father. He is the God of the
promise; unlike a man who signs off on a commitment but
later breaks it. He does not change His mind by saying
“yes” today and “no” tomorrow. The situation you are in
may appear hopeless. Be encouraged because every
circumstance is subject to change. Amid the impossibilities
you face, the Holy Spirit is within you, and as you listen to
His voice, He will never lead you astray. He will remind you
of the faithfulness of God and tell you the Lord will never
fail you. The “promise of the Father” is the Holy Spirit. He
guarantees all the Lord has for you in this life and the one
that comes after!
The Hebrew word for sow means to conceive or become
pregnant. The word of God is the seed we must conceive
and birth out in our life. It is full of divine promises that are
ours if we can receive them by faith. We must cling to them
tightly and never let them go. We have an adversary that
works against us. He plans to discourage us to doubt so we
will abort the seed. The Holy Spirit will guide us and comfort
us in times of despair. He will bring to birth the seed of God
we have planted in our hearts. Without a close relationship
with Him, we will fail and, worse, give up on our promise.
Always remember the Lord is not slack in fulfilling His
promise to you. One day to Him is like a thousand, and a
thousand days are like only one. As a mother whose child is
developing in her womb, you must remain patient, knowing
hidden goodness is within you. When the time is right, the
Lord is faithful to bring every promise to bear.

lunch afterwards at a local
home-cooking diner. They
liked to be normal and they
didn’t like anyone messing
with that normal.
I did not find Harper Lee (the
town’s people were keenly loy
al in keeping her whereabouts
a secret) or a signed copy of To
Kill A Mockingbird.
A gift shop clerk said, “One
day, Nelle was in here, picking
out a birthday card. A woman
recognized her and asked if she
would sign her copy of To Kill
A Mockingbird. Nell never said
a word. She looked at her then
turned and walked out. She
never came back and got that
card either!”
After a fruitless search, I was
about to leave Monroeville
when I decided to stop by
the town’s newspaper office
and speak to the publisher.
Graciously, he explained that
Nelle liked to be left alone so
“we just leave her alone. This
is her home and we’re glad she
still comes down her from New
York City and spends time.”
“When was the last time you
saw her?” I asked.
He pursed his lips, focused
on something laying on the
desk then slowly shook his
head. “I don’t know,” he
scratched his cheek. “Maybe
four or five years ago.”
The receptionist, whose desk
looked straight out the front
glass entrance where a newspa
per box set, had been listening
to our conversation.
“Well, I see her every
Wednesday,”
“You do!” he exclaimed.
“Yes. Every Wednesday, she
walks down here, and buys a
copy of the paper from that
box.”
The publisher’s eyes wid
ened then he looked back at
me. “I never had a clue.”
Last summer, on the way
back from Mobile, I decided
to drive the beautiful Alabama
backroads to the other side of
Montgomery. I stopped at a
Monroeville diner for an early
lunch then ate quickly so I
could give my table to Alabama
Power linemen. They took off
their hats and thanked me.
Every person in that diner
said grace before taking a bite.
From the diner’s parking lot,
I took a photo of the town’s
water tower then I preceded
downtown. In the center of
town is its crown jewel: the
courthouse that is identical to
the one from the movie - inside
and out. Director Robert Mulli
gan brought a set designer from
Continued from 5
L.A. with the directions, “Rec
reate this courthouse down to
the last stone.”
In the courthouse is a mu
seum celebrating Miss Nelle,
and her childhood pal, Truman
Capote, the inspiration for the
eccentric Dill who, during
a childhood summer, taught
Scout (Nelle) the power of
imagination and storytelling.
It’s a visit well worth taking
for those who like quiet towns
- even famous ones - with hos
pitable people who say, “We’d
be mighty glad to have you
come back sometime.”

turned, he followed his “oath”

voted to dismantle it.
It also is worth mention
ing that each of the Republi
can nominees to the Supreme
Court were careful to give
lip service to the doctrine of
stare decisis —the legal prin
ciple of deference expressed
in the Latin phrase, “let stand
what has been decided.” They
never directly said they saw
Roe v. Wade as a decision that
could not or should not be
overturned. While the Justices
may be innocent of making
false statements in a court of
law, they gave the Senate the
impression that they would not
overturn Roe if it came before
them. Candidate Trump in
2016 said the overturning of
the Supreme Court decision
giving women the right to abor
tion “will happen, automati
cally,” if he is elected president
and gets to appoint justices to
the high court. He also said if
the Roe v. Wade ruling were to
be reversed, laws concerning
abortion would “go back to the
individual states” as was the
case prior to Roe. Former Pres
ident Trump recently thanked
Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh,
and Amy Coney Barrett for
their courage in overturning
this landmark decision.

free society. While the three
justices would not qualify
for the Joseph Story Award,
Federalist Society recognition
for the fidelity, perseverance,
and loyalty should be given to
Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh,
and Coney Barrett. In the past
fifty years, there has been no
greater conservative achieve
ment than decisions based on
the originalist interpretation of
the Constitution.
The Supreme Court is a rule
unto itself. No judicial body
can challenge its decisions or
actions. While federal judges
have no single, comprehensive
ethics code, the Judicial Code
of Ethics states: A judge shall
uphold and promote the inde
pendence, integrity, and im
partiality of the judiciary, and
shall avoid impropriety and the
appearance of impropriety. A
judge shall perform the duties
of judicial office impartially,
competently, and diligently.
When Judge Ketanji Brown
Jackson was asked if she would
recluse herself from high-
profile affirmative action cases
involving Harvard University,
she said she would. Justice
Clarence Thomas’ activist wife
Ginni communicated with vari
ous officials in behalf of Trump
on January 6. When asked if
Justice Thomas would recuse
himself from cases where his
wife was involved, he refused
to avoid the appearance of
impropriety and say he would
recuse himself. The Supreme
Court should be seen as a fair
arbiter of justice. The Ameri
can people no longer believe
this is the case.
