Those who believe abortion is murder might feel that making abortion illegal is the proper step to take. This action on its face would save thousands if not millions of lives. The repeal of Roe v. Wade has been advocated by pro-life adherents for nearly fifty years. However, abortion has been widely practiced in America since its earliest days. In the 1950s, estimates of numbers of illegal, unsafe abor tions ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million per year. While the methods used were often ineffective and dangerous, desperate women travelled into the back alley residences, where they endured unsafe and unhealthy medical procedures. It is not farfetched to imagine that outlawing legal abortions will significantly increase death and injury of young women and their babies. Some may say that these losses are “collateral dam age” not realizing that until re cently there has been a 30 year decline in the number of abor tions. As state governments make abortions more difficult to obtain, matters concerning women’s health has moved front and center. Some states are beginning to monitor births and holding mothers responsible for any abnormality. The Rondarosa is a big job. There are pastures to bush hog, barn stalls to muck, grass to cut, and tree limbs to pick up, constantly. The three grand-nephews who traded off between them selves to help “Aunt Ronda” - Jon, Tripp, and Nix - were 14, 17 and 20. Honestly, I didn’t expect them to be an abundance of help. Though they’re coun try kids, they’re more of what I’d call “country elite.” They’re not kids who HAVE to live in the country like I did and scrape by on the Lord’s grace. They are ones who are privileged to live on miles of rolling hills with creeks and stunning views of the Ap palachian foothills. Too, their parents are all white-collared, well-educated professionals. My expectations were not high. What a pleasant surprise unfolded for me as the gentle Spring turned into the brutal steam of a deep South Sum- RICH, mer.
