^FOR THE RECORD
Declining to reveal payment method

Craig Alley got arrested
after he figured his method
of payment was not anyone’s
business.
The Burke County Sheriff’s
Office responded to Dollar
General on Greiner Circle,
Wednesday, August 31, after
Alley had been in the store
for over an hour pacing back
and forth because his purchas
ing card was declined several
times. A deputy attempting to
assist him in the card process
ing process, asked him to see
his card because it appeared to
be a food stamp card and Al
ley was attempting to get cash
back, according to the official
incident report.
In response, Alley hid the
card from view, exclaiming it
was his card and attempted to
leave abruptly which in turn
raised the deputy’s suspicion.
When Alley was told to “stop”
and produce the card, he fled
from the scene, heading toward
Hwy 25. Another BCSO depu
ty attempted to talk to Alley in
the median, but he once again
fled on foot. While deputies ap
proached him with lights flash
ing, Alley tried to enter into a
car that had pulled over. When
that failed, he attempted to run
again. Deputies were able to
“guide him to the ground” by
grabbing his backpack. Once
in custody, it was determined
that the financial transaction
card did belong to Alley. Alley
was charged with obstruction
of law enforcement officers
and transported to the Burke
County Detention Center.

Not dead just hospitalized

A local woman was left
confused and visibly shaken
Thursday, September 1, after
a Burke County Sheriff’s Of
fice deputy was incorrectly
informed that Kristen Vauderyt
was dead.
The BCSO went to Vaud
eryt’s home on Herndon Road
to notify Hope Purkey that
Vauderyt had died due to an
overdose of meth.
“As Purkey was upset and
shocked to hear this, she in
formed me that this could
not be possible due to recent
contact with (Vauderyt),” the
BCSO Corporal wrote in the
official report. “I advised Pur
key that I was sorry for her loss,
but I was sent to this address to
advise her of this notification.”
The BCSO corporal then
contacted dispatch to confirm
the information. The dispatcher
confirmed that Vauderyt was
indeed dead. However, some
thing just didn’t add up in the
corporal’s mind, so he asked to
be transferred to the Blooming-
dale Police Department officer
who reported the incident to
Burke County dispatch. The
BPD officer stated he did
not advise that Vauderyt was
deceased, only that she had
overdosed on meth and was
hospitalized.

Upon entering a residence
on Farmers Bridge Road Au
gust 29, the Burke County
Sheriff’s Office’s Special Re
sponse Team was met inside
the threshold of the door by
Michael Whitaker who was
holding a small caliber semi
automatic handgun.
After officers engaged in
a brief struggle with Whita
ker, he was taken into custody
without further incident. Upon
further search of the residence,
James Gordon Martin was lo
cated inside the kitchen dispos
ing of narcotics. Martin began
actively fighting with deputies
and after a brief struggle he
Bird dog
the commissioners. Then
there was Williams’ brilliant
idea to buy gas at convenience
stores instead of through the
county. That cost taxpayers
over $50,000 in extra fuel
expenses this year.
Those funds would have
gone a long way in address
ing Williams’ lengthy list of
needs and some of his wants.
Instead, he wasted that money
at multiple turns all by his own
was also taken into custody.
The BCSO seized metham-
phetamines, packing equip
ment and several firearms. A
check of James Gordon Martin
showed he had an active war
rant for failing to register as a
sex offender. Both Whitaker
and Martin were transported
to the Burke County Deten
tion Center. Whitaker was
charged with possession of
methamphetamine with intent
to distribute and possession of
a firearm during the commis
sion of a crime. Martin was
charged with possession of
methamphetamine, felony ob
struction of a law enforcement
officer and failure to register as
a sex offender.

The sheriff is fond of acco
lades. His Facebook page is a
shrine to himself and the praise
others pour on him. He is quick
to take credit for the actions of
his department. It’s past time
he take responsibility for its
spending as well.
