By Linda Lariscey
RETURN TO REMAIN
“This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Annies
says: Return to me, and I will return to you...”
Don’t be like your ancestors who would not
listen or pay attention.
Zechariah 1:3-4 (NLT)
Do you know you were in the Father’s heart before the foundation
of the world? He formed you in your mother’s womb and watched
over you as you grew. He created you in His image and likeness.
He has also seen every work of the devil penetrate and mar your
soul. He is very much aware of your every weakness and those of
your ancestors. Yet His love is set upon you. Every time you have
left Him for another, He patiently waits for you to return.
Though your iniquities are like crimson, the Lord can make them
white as wool. Return to Him, and He will return to you. His promises
remain faithful, for they are always “Yes and Amen.” Don’t be afraid
to come back to the Lord. His mercies are new every morning. They
will never cease, and you activate them as you reach for His hand.
He will pull you out of the miry clay and place you on solid ground.
Great is His love for you. He desires that you would love Him as
He loves you.
Only Jesus, our Savior, can destroy the sin in our life. He is the Lord
of Heaven’s Armies. Almighty, is He! Separate from Him, we can do
nothing. Repentance is impossible without the Lord’s grace in your
life. Your part is to believe He is able. He has the power to illuminate
your thinking and transform you into a person who thinks and acts
like Him. Ask yourself, “How do I live apart from Him?” In what ways
do I “Blaze my trail” and “Through it all, do it my way?” Holy Spirit
will help you to turn back. A slight turn of your head prompts the
Lord to move toward you.

German educational philoso
pher, Wilhelm von Humboldt,
there are undeniably certain
kinds of knowledge that must
be of a general nature and,
more importantly, a certain
cultivation of the mind and
character that nobody can
afford to be without. People
obviously cannot be good craft
workers, merchants, soldiers or
businessmen unless, regardless
of their occupation, they are
good, upstanding and - accord
ing to their condition - well-
informed human beings and
citizens. This universal role
of education provided a wedge
that conservative politicians
used to reduce public funding.
As a college degree became
synonymous with financial
success, costs rose. The gap
in funding a college education
was filled by students work
ing two or more jobs, parental
funds, and securing public and
private college loans.
In the late 1950s, federal
loans encouraged the study
of subjects that would make
the United States more com
petitive with the Soviet Union
in the space race. The stu
dent loan program became the
Higher Education Act of 1965
designed “to strengthen the
educational resources of our
colleges and universities and
provide financial assistance to
students in postsecondary and
higher education.”
Today, approximately 70%
of American students take out
loans to go to college. The
average graduate leaves school
with around $30,000 in debt
with 45 million Americans
owing $1.6 trillion in student
loans. A substantial amount of
student debt is owed by Ameri
cans 62 years and older. Of the
forty-five million Americans
who have student debt, one in
five are over fifty years old.
The New Yorker Magazine
told an interesting story about a
fifty-two year old black woman
who enrolled in New York
University’s Law School. She
borrowed twenty-nine thou
sand dollars in federal loans
and today that ninety-one year
old woman owes $329,309.69.
Some may argue that she made
the debt and should pay it;
however, many would say that
she likely paid the original loan
many times over.
In other countries, getting a
college degree is considered a
benefit to the nation. In a study
Continued from 5
conducted by the Economic
Co-Operation and Develop
ment (OECD) found that the
U.S. has the highest average
tuition cost of the 35 OECD
member countries. About a
third of the countries in the
report, including Denmark and
Finland, do not charge any tu
ition fees at all for public insti
tutions at the bachelor level. In
10 countries, such as Austria,
Italy, and the Netherlands, tu
ition fees are less than $4,000.
The United States is an
outlier in what we pay for our
health care, medicines, child
care, and higher education. Is
the rest of the world wrong
and we’re the only one right
or should we reexamine our
priorities and agree there are
areas of exceptionality that do
not serve our interest?

members.
Saunders encouraged parents
to be nosey about what their
kids are doing and who they
are with. He advises parents to
conduct unannounced searches
of their children’s bedrooms.
He suggests that parents check
their kids’ phones for fights
that are made known through
text messages, which could
potentially end up as gunhghts.
Checking social media sites
can enlighten parents to the
fact that their kids are victims
of bullying. Children do not
always vocalize what is bother
ing them, he said. The quieter
a child becomes, the more a
Tinker
off to see the cardiologist.
Included in the battery of
tests was a routine exam, an
echocardiogram, and an EKG.
In addition, my doctor thought
it a good idea to undergo either
a cardiac stress test or cardiac
CT scan, as well. That was an
easy choice on my part since
a stress test involves exercise.
Instead, I lazily opted for the
CT scan.
By now, you may’ve picked
up on some anxiety I was real
izing. I was whistling past the
graveyard — for fear that I
might, sooner than later, be the
one whistling in the graveyard.
Or rather, not whistling at all.
“Baby,” I said to Ronda,
“I’m a little worried about my
CT scan.” But if I was looking
for sympathy, let alone a shoul
der to cry on, I wasn’t going to
find it in my wife — and her
grin belied her words, “Don’t
worry, Tink. If something’s
wrong, I’m sure they’ll be able
to fix it.”
And with that, Ronda went
back to whatever it was she
was doing that was more im
portant.
I can’t say that I was in
credulous or even hurt by her
nonchalance. After all, she’d
warned me for years, that
someday, my lousy diet and
lack of exercise would catch
up with me.
Now, don’t misunderstand,
(and any regular reader of this
column knows), Ronda is not
insensitive or uncaring. To
the contrary, she is terrifically
empathic and tender. But she
is also a great believer that one
reaps what they sow. They get
what they deserve. That a hoist

parent needs to engage. Com
municating with children lets
them know that their parent
cares. Listening to children
helps enable the parent to un
derstand the child’s thoughts.
It also gives the parent better
clarity on how to guide them.
“At the end of the day, this
is not about good kids or bad
kids,” he said. “This is about
good decisions and bad deci
sions.”
Saunders spoke during the
Augusta Judicial Circuit Juve

held at the Burke County High
School auditorium August 30.

on one’s own petard is usually
a comeuppance deserved. And
while Ronda would always
certainly be there for me, it
just wasn't how I might expect.
“You WANT there to be
something wrong,” I said ac-
cusatorially.
“Oh, Tink, don’t be ridicu
lous.” And again, her slight
grin spoke volumes as to how
she was really feeling. Regard
less, before heading off for my
CT scan early the next morn
ing, Ronda and I prayed about
whatever might lie ahead. I
prayed particularly hard.
A while later, I returned
to my cardiologist so that he
might deliver the results, good
or bad. “Everything looks
great,” he said, sitting down.
“There’s not the slightest indi
cation of any arterial blockage
or other trouble.”
I was thrilled, of course —
and immediately thanked God
for His goodness and mercy;
not only for my health but
for sustaining me through my
dietary and calisthenic short
comings.
Immediately, I called Ronda.
And while I was relieved and
thankful for the news — vow
ing to regard it as a reprieve
that might lead me to develop
ing better habits — I can’t say
I didn’t have some glee when
I told Ronda my results.
“Dang,” she said.
And that’s where I’ll leave
Ronda to tell her side of this
story next week.
John Tinker is writing for
Ronda Rich this week. She will
be back next week to tell her
side of this story
