Lady Bears play a back-and-forth week

The Burke County volleyball
team is nearing the end of their
regular season. Per usual, the
Lady Bears had another game-
heavy week, playing five total
matches in just three days.
Tuesday they traveled to
Glenn Hills High School for
a tri-match with Glenn Hills
and Putnam County. They con
tinued their tradition of slow
starts, according to head coach
David Skinner. “I thought our
energy wasn't where I'd like it
to be... in the first match,” said
Skinner. This lack of energy
showed as they started a little
sluggish and committed many
defensive errors. Skinner said,
“I'd like more consistency
in that area” Luckily for the
Bears, they saw improvement
as they played. This led to a
sweep of Glenn Hills, 25-17
and 25-6. They continued play
ing well during the tournament,
also sweeping Putnam County
mirroring Skinner’s claims that
the Lady Bears are “an overall
better team” when they play to
their full potential.
On Thursday, they trav
eled to New Hampstead High
School in Bloomingdale for
a quad-region match against
New Hampstead, Southeast
Bulloch, and Islands High
School. They played a tough
back-and-forth match with
New Hampstead first that was
tied 1-1 at one point. De
spite solid defensive play, the
Lady Bears ultimately lost 2-1
thanks to untimely officiating
and offensive errors.
After the first match, they
played Southeast Bulloch.

Skinner said that he “thought
[they] executed well offen
sively and defensively.” Re
gardless, they still fell short to
Southeast Bulloch 26-24 and
25-23.
For their third match, they
played the region's number one
team, Islands out of Savannah.
It is unfortunate to play Islands
after two hard-fought matches
because, as coach Skinner ac
knowledged, the Lady Bears,
“were mentally fatigued” by
this point. They lost the match
0-2. Hope is not lost though, as
Burke County gets a revenge
match this week when they
meet them again in a tri-match
with Wayne County.

specifics, the Lady Bears were

to find their stride

This week, the BCHS Lady
Bears softball team saw their
first three-game week in quite a
while. The past few weeks have
been light thanks to scheduling
and weather cancellations.
Over this stretch, the Lady
Bears went 1-2 overall and 1-1
in region, bringing their regular
season record to 9-8 and their
region record to 1-2.
Their first game of the week
was away at Lakeside. The
Lady Bears started off poorly
both offensively and defen
sively, losing the lead early,
0-7. The bats never did find
a rhythm as Burke County
was unable to score a single
run. Defensively, Ashlee Ray,
Brylie Mallard, and Arliyah
Crumbley shared time on the
mound, but the girls were never
able to overcome the deficit
from the first inning, ultimately
losing 0-8.
On Tuesday, they were able
to find their stride a bit easier.
Their region game versus New
Hampstead began with a three-
run first from New Hampstead
that was quickly matched by
Burke County. Over the next
five innings, the Lady Bears
played shutout defense and
solid offense to ultimately win
the game 11-3. Offensively,
some notable performances

were Maddox Russell who
had three hits with two RBIs,
Ashlee Ray who had two hits
with two RBIs, and Braylin
Fare who had two hits. Defen
sively, Ashlee Ray had a strong
outing on the mound. Despite
the three run first, she didn’t
allow a single run to be scored
the rest of the game.
Their next region game was
Thursday against Southeast
Bulloch. All teams have that
one game they wish they could
forget about, and this was that
for Burke County. The girls
Bears were mercy ruled in the
third inning, ultimately los
ing 0-17. Homecoming week
may have been a big reason
for this loss. Thursday was
the Homecoming parade, and
many starters participated in
that with their various clubs
and school groups.
Regardless, Burke County
looks to bounce back with a
four-game week that includes
two region matchups versus
Islands out of Savannah and
a second meeting versus an
impressive Wayne County.
A win here could provide a
young BCHS team with a much
needed confidence boost to
finish out the season. For those
wishing to support the Lady
Bears at home, they may do
so on Thursday, September 22
at 5:30 pm.
Is you child straggling
If your child has fallen behind in school over the past two years, there may be a way for him
or her to get a fresh start with the PACE program.
PACE, a one-on-one brain-training program, can help re-ignite the desire to learn in any
child who may have suffered because of the effect the COVID pandemic had on the public and
private schools throughout the world.
Distance learning and confusing schedules, though certainly necessary to protect students,
teachers and staff members, may have taken a toll on your child's education progress.
A consultation can tell you if the PACE Program can help your child regain the drive and self
confidence to succeed and excel in school.
PACE can identify & successfully treat learning problems that
are often reflected in the following behaviors:
r/ Is unable to sit still; can't stay on task for any length of time; is easily distracted;
avoids work that seems complicated.
Has difficulty comprehending and remembering; has problems sounding out
words; does written work very slowly; often fails to complete tasks.
tr Has difficulty copying material; constantly looks up & down; often needs instruc
tions repeated.
v Has trouble reading & spelling; makes reversals - for example: confusing the
words "was” and “saw” or the letters "b" and “d".
S Is disorganized & frustrated when studying; makes frequent, "careless” errors.
PACE may be the answer you seek!
