LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Editor:
Much is made in the media about the proliferation of violence
in our culture. In a recent speech by Chief Judge Willie M.
Saunders, quoted in The True Citizen, he decries the crimes of
juveniles as becoming increasingly serious in the last two de
cades. I would like to suggest three parallel social changes that
have accompanied this plague of violence and laid the founda
tions for it.
1. The breakdown of the family. Children who are not the
product of a solid, loving, marriage have many strikes against
them. Their upbringing teaches them that moral values have little
worth, and that one can make his own decisions about what is
right or wrong or good with no thought about the affect of those
decisions on others. Unstable homes often leave children mostly
on their own to develop their values from their associates in the
streets, popular entertainment, and social media.
2. The dismissal of God. The Bible attributes many violent
scenarios to a lack of the fear of God. Even in a culture which
does not serve God, an underlying respect for His principles
does much to curb the baser instincts of humanity. However,
the influential voices of contemporary Western culture have
become increasingly scornful of the idea that God should have a
say in how we live. While I recognize that there are many who
insincerely use Christianity as a political or social facade, truly
following the teaching and life of Jesus Christ would resolve
not only the tsunami of violence that is engulfing us, but other
social ills as well.
3. The disrespect for human life. Despite the attempt in the cur
rent debate over abortion to reclassify unborn babies as something
other than human beings, most of us intrinsically know that is
exactly what they are. Wallpapering over the issue by redefin
ing an unborn child has contributed to the desensitization in our
culture to the destruction of human life in other ways. In the
extreme, the idea of both is the same: if you are an inconvenience
in my life, I am justified in eliminating you.
Every reader should understand that we all can play a role,
within our sphere of influence, in reversing this trend toward
violence. Let’s start by addressing these three root causes, and we
will probably find other ways to help. We can make a difference.
