boro, peacefully entered into rest September 20 in NYU
Fangone Medical Center in New
York, where he has been a resi
dent for over 50 years.
Funeral services will be held at
10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at Kin
sey & Walton Chapel. The family
will receive friends from 9 a.m.
until the hour of service. Inter
ment will follow in Fort Jackson
National Cemetery, 4170 Per-

Paul Samuel Hartman, 94, formally of Hinton, Va., passed
away on Friday, September 30,2022, at his daughter’s home
in Georgia, where he resided for
five years.
He was preceded in death by
two brothers, Harold Hartman
and Fewis Hartman; and a sister,
Ruth Weaver. He is survived by
his daughter, Rose Mary Heat-
wole (Byard); a son, Ed Hartman
(Patti); two sisters, Rosalie Esh-
leman (Robert) and Anne Mae
Hostetler (John); six grandsons;
one granddaughter; 25 great
grandchildren; two great-great
grandchildren; and 14 nieces and
nephews.
In 1945, he married Dorothy Katherine Cave of Finville,
VA. Paul was the oldest member of Rawley Springs Mennonite
Church. He was an active song leader, Sunday School teacher
and enjoyed investing in the lives of young men and took them
on many adventures, including fishing, boat outings on the
North River, and hiking and overnight stays at his cabin on
Cooper’s Mountain. He was involved in a lifetime of music.
He sang with “The Mennonite Hour” Singers. He directed the
West Valley Chorus of the Virginia Mennonite Conference in
the 1960’s. He was the oldest surviving member of the Eight
Singing Men.
Paul was a part time driver of Quick’s Bus Company which
took him many places in the US and Canada. Many will re
member him as the owner of many different businesses which
include Superior Concrete, Rockingham Driving School, Val
ley Rentals, and Valley Paper Recycling.
He was affectionately known as Grandpa-Paul and Pa-Pa by
young and old alike. He enjoyed hunting, hying his J-3 Piper
Cub, and often went horseback riding. With a serving heart,
he volunteered with MDS and did short term mission work
in Central and South America.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday,
October 4 at Burkeland Mennonite Church in Waynesboro,
Ga. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m to
8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6 at Bank Mennonite Church in
Dayton, Va. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday,
October 7 at Bank Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at
Rawley Springs Mennonite Church Cemetery.

After an incredible life that was filled with love, adventure
and many accomplishments, David Leroy Stone II, 69, of
Louisville, Tennessee, died tragically in a helicopter accident
on September 3,2022. Dave was a remarkable man in every
way, with a beautiful, kind and loving soul. He had a peaceful
calmness and gentleness within him that was comforting to
his family and friends.
Dave was born on February 11, 1953 in Augusta, Geor
gia to Paul Sinclair and Gloria Collins Stone. He grew up
in Waynesboro where he was confirmed in the Methodist
Church. Dave graduated from the Edmund Burke Academy
in 1971 where he lettered in football under Coach Pooley
Hubert. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology
where he was on the gymnastics team, was a member of
Chi Psi Fraternity, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil
Engineering in 1976.
From early on, Dave loved to hy and followed in his father’s
footsteps to become a pilot. He began logging time when he
was 13 years old and soloed on his 16th birthday. Later, Dave
sought hight training in the military, hrst joining the Marine
Corps for a program that was discontinued.
After college, Dave began crop dusting, hight instructing
and hying night freight to log the required hours needed to
be hired by a commercial airline. In 1981 he joined Pied
mont Airlines as a hrst officer and three years later, Captain;
the onset of a career transitioning through US Airways to
American Airlines, hying internationally and retiring after
37 years of service.
Concurrently with his commercial pilot career, Dave joined
the Georgia Air National Guard 165th Tactical Airlift Squad
ron , Savannah, GA as a navigator on the C-130E and C-130H
from 1978 to 1986. In 1987, Dave discovered his passion
for hying helicopters when he joined the Tennessee Army
National Guard 4/278th Armored Calvary Regiment where
he hew Hueys, OH6, OH58, AF1F and Black Hawks. Dave
retired from the Guard after faithfully serving his country
for 23 years, attaining the rank of both Captain and Chief
Warrant Officer 3.
In 2011, Dave married his beloved wife, Terry. A ’’jack of
all trades,” Dave built his home, hangar and barn on the Ten
nessee River where he and Terry were enjoying life together
at Stone Field, the airheld he shared with Terry’s horses.
Dave enjoyed being a father to Laura Beth (daughter of his
late wife, Ronda), playing with his step granddaughters,
horseback riding with Terry, and working with Terry on their
many projects. His passion for hying continued with the Vans
RV8 airplane that he built with a friend and in which he hew
aerobatic maneuvers. He was a member of the Quiet Birdman,
Experimental Aircraft Association, International Aerobatic
Club and The Royal Air Force Club in London. His was a
life well lived.
Dave was a true Southern
gentleman with a genuine com
passion and willingness to help
others; he lived by his personal
code of ethics and responsibil
ity and his commitment to his
family and friends. He had a
determination and patience to
solve complex problems and
achieve his goals. His gentle
grace, infectious sense of hu
mor and adventurous spirit will
be sorely missed by all who
knew and loved him.
Dave is predeceased by his
parents, brother Paul Stone,
Jr., and late wife Ronda Wills
Stone. He is survived by his
beloved wife of 11 years Terry
Stone, daughter Laura Beth
(Allison) Stone of Knoxville,
TN; stepdaughter Dana (Kevin)
Nusbaum of Cary, NC, stepson
Tom Mergens of Luck, WI,
step-granddaughters Jocelyn,
Evelyn and Madelyn Nusbaum,
brother Jesse (Amanda) Stone
of Waynesboro, GA and many
nieces, nephews and cousins.
