Charlie Dorsey blows through two Sharks’ tacklers.
Bears rout Islands 63-0

Burke County was looking
for their first Region 3-AAAA
win last week. They also need
ed a bounce-back game after a
tough loss to Benedictine two
weeks ago where their offense
never found the end zone.
The Bears got both as they
blistered a struggling Islands
High School team in the Bear
Den 63-0.
Burke County’s offense, with
more than one starter taking
the week off, scored on every
possession in the first half.
They did the same thing in the
second, with a running clock
and underclassmen getting
virtually all of the action.
With the win, the Bears
move to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in
the region with three regular
season games left, all against
region opponents.
The Sharks fall to 0-8 overall
and 0-3 in region play. The 63
points they allowed were the
second most scored on them
this season. It was the third
time they’ve been shutout this
year.
“On paper, that’s what was
supposed to happen,” said
Bears’ head coach, Eric Parker,
acknowledging Islands’ diffi
cult season. “We know what’s
supposed to happen but that’s
not always what happens. You
have to go out there and get it
done. I thought the kids came
out and just executed and kind
of took it to them.”
Parker admitted he was
proud of the way his under
classmen and non-starters
handled themselves as well.
“Even when the young guys
got in there is what really made
it good. There was just no drop
off in effort and intensity and
even execution,” he said.
“It’s a lot of fun when you’re
in ninth grade, getting a chance
to play on Friday night, under
the lights, in front of the big
crowd,” he added.
Parker said that just as im
portant as getting his younger
kids much-needed experi
ence, Friday’s game allowed
a number of injured starters
and banged-up players to get
a welcome break. With the
Bears being off this Friday,
that gives many of his kids a
two-week rest.
“It gave some guys the op
portunity to get several days
of non-contact,” Parker said.
“Now you always worry about
them losing their edge but it’s
just as important to try and get
some guys healthy.”
The Bears racked up 580
total yards of offense on just
39 plays. The bulk of that was
on the ground with 445 rushing
yards. Burke had 135 passing
yards.
Islands had only 89 total
yards on 44 plays with 64 pass
ing yards and only 25 rushing
yards.
Friday’s game was a good
chance to get a look at the
Bears’ future quarterbacks as
senior Marshall Flowers took
the night off. Junior Jensen
Brantley took the bulk of the
first half snaps, completing 6
of 8 passes for 135 yards and
2 touchdowns. He had 5 carries
for 51 yards and a solo rushing
touchdown.
Freshman quarterback Sean
Vandiver had 3 carries for 73
yards including a 64-yard run
that almost resulted in a touch
down and set the Bears up for
a score moments later.
Seven different players
scored touchdowns for the
Bears with A’merre Williams
and Jeremy Richardson both
making their way into the end
zone twice.
Junior kicker Blake Burden
was a perfect 9 for 9 on point
after attempts for the night.
Senior defensive lineman
Damion Prescott had a scoop
and score when the Sharks
fumbled the ball on a handoff,
and he ran it back for a touch
down.
Junior defensive back Ja-
kari Crawford intercepted an
Islands pass in the endzone
and returned the ball the entire
length of the field to score
shortly before halftime, but
that touchdown was overturned
due to block in the back penalty
against the Bears.
Burke County will take this
week off before hosting New
Hampstead on Wednesday,
Oct. 26. Kickoff for that game
is 7:00 pm.
That Wednesday game is
required to allow the Bears to
schedule their previously post
poned game at Wayne County
due to Hurricane Ian.
The Bears will now travel to
Jesup to face the Yellow Jack
ets on Monday, Oct. 31.
Burke County will wrap up
its regular season at Southeast
Bulloch on Friday, Nov. 4.

The BCHS Fady Bears
played their last two regular
season softball games last
week against Jenkins County
and Thomson. Entering the
week, the Fady Bears were 13-
13 overall, and they finished
the regular season right at .500
with a 14-14 overall record
after splitting games.
Tuesday, the Bears faced off
against neighboring Jenkins
County High School. They
ultimately won 10-7 thanks to
two strong opening innings.
The girls scored four points in
both the first and second in
nings, giving them an early 8-3
lead. Even a late-game rally by
Jenkins County wasn’t enough
to erase the deficit they found
themselves in. Paige Sullivan
was the heroine in this game,
recording two hits and four
RBIs. Other notable perfor
mances were Maddox Russell,
who had two RBIs of her own
and Arliyah Crumbley who had
two hits and an RBI to show for
it. Defensively, pitching aces
Ashlee Ray and Crumbley con
tinue to be a dominant pitching
pair. Each pitched for three
innings recording a combined
twenty-two first pitch strikes
and seven strikeouts.
Burke County finished their
softball season with a loss to
Thomson, 3-8. There wasn’t
much difference between their
first and the last games as
Thomson came out on top 6-3.
Many Bears still had decent
outings offensively, includ
ing senior Alyssa Rabun who
recorded one RBI on as many
hits. Defensively Crumbley
and Ray did what they do best,
pitching a total of six innings
and recording three strikeouts.
What’s next for the Fady
Bears? They travel to Fay
etteville for the first round of
the state playoffs. The tourna
ment is double elimination.
Burke County will start by
playing the number one seed,
Whitewater at 1:00 pm and
proceed as necessary. If they
defeat Whitewater, they will
play again at 7:00 pm; if they
lose to Whitewater, they will
play again at 5:00 pm. If the
Fady Bears can win at least
one game on Tuesday, they
will play again on Wednesday.
Stay tuned next week for the
tournament results.
BCHS girls volleyball wraps up season

This past Saturday, the
BCHS Fady Bears volleyball
team played in the region
3-AAA tournament at New
Hampstead High School .Hav
ing finished fifth in the regular
season, the Fady Bears, faced
off against a third place Wayne
County.
The girls practiced hard in
preparation for this tourna
ment and head coach David
Skinner thought their efforts
showed right from the start of
the first match. “We got off to
the start I'd hoped we would,”
said Skinner. Wayne County
has good outside and middle
hitters, and Burke County de
fended them very well. They
won the first set 25-21.
Their second set started slow,
and the Bears were down ten
points quickly. The Fady Bears
played extremely hard to cut
the lead to just three, but unfor
tunately ended up losing the set
20-25. Some serving errors and
untimely officiating negatively
swung the momentum, causing
the Fady Bears to drop the third
set 25-16.
However, with their season
on the line, Burke County
responded in the next set by
playing next level defense and
taking advantage of all scoring
opportunities. They won the
fourth set 25-16 and forced a
tie-break.
Fighting for the right to
advance to the first round of
the state tournament, the Fady
Bears began set five by com
mitting too many errors. They
quickly found themselves be
hind by four points, which, in
a game of only fifteen, can be
hard to overcome. Ultimately,
Burke County lost the tie-break
15-6.
The Fady Bears volleyball
season comes to an abrupt
halt. When reflecting on the
season, Coach Skinner said,
“I can't tell you how proud I
am of our players.” Although
the team was young this year,
all spectators had the privilege
of watching them mature as
volleyball players right before
their eyes. The volleyball team
finished the regular season
20-11, and, as Coach Skinner
would say, “That’s nothing to
sneeze at.” Though it won’t be
for another year, the volleyball
program is in a great place, and
everyone should be excited to
see next year's version of Burke
County Fady Bears volleyball.
The added mantra for next
season is to buckle up for the
2023 season, because “there's
unfinished business.”
We need not let the year
pass without acknowledging
some key players. The Fady
Bears were led by Treyonna
Jones with 15 kills, 8 digs, and
1 block; Gloriahna Roberson
with 33 digs, 5 assists, and
1 ace; and Krystalyn Buxton
with 5 kills,4 digs, and 2 aces.
