John 15:6-11 (NLT) Anyone who does not remain in me... with
ers. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you. you
may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! S When
you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings
great glory to my Father. I have told you these things so that you
will be filed with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!
I love to see my American flag flying high. It’s stunning when
the wind catches it, but without the wind, it just droops on the
flagpole. The joy of the Lord is like a flag raised when Christ
becomes our focus in life. The Holy Spirit activates it, and our
very countenance shows it off. Flags flown from on high get
people’s attention just like the joy on your face is eye-catching.
Jesus wants you to know first His joy so that your joy can be
complete. He chose and appointed you to bear fruit, to live on
purpose so that you might have an abundant life. Abiding in
Christ makes the soil of your heart fertile. God’s word flourishes
in you, and without any self-effort, you become fruitful. The
seeds that you plant in others change their lives. God answers
your prayers in marvelous ways. Your joy doubles as you see
your life change and the lives of those you influence.
Have you been drooping a bit lately? Are you withering on the
vine? You need fresh wind. Ask the Holy Spirit to blow upon you
and teach you how to abide in Christ. Decide to listen to God’s
word and sit under teaching that will change your mindset. Soak
both in His love and His Word; before long, the sap of God’s
joy within you will rise, and you will rise high with it!

during my NASCAR years.
I have never known a nicer
person or a more cooperative
driver.
A couple of years ago, we
ran into Mark at a NASCAR
Hall of Lame event. Wisely,
he had been inducted into the
Hall of Lame the previous
year. We exchanged remem
brances - including the 1990
Championship that Mark had
lost by a few points to Earn
hardt - and laughed about
happier times. Once, after the
last San Francisco earthquake,
Mark, his wife, Arlene, and I
had been flown by helicopter
over the ravaged city on a
flight to a press conference in
Sacramento.
After the press conference,
we returned to the ball held to
meet the helicopter that had
previously landed there in the
midst of the diamond. There,
he assured us, he’d be waiting
for the trip back to San Fran
cisco. He had disappeared. For
two hours, we waited until we

were told that the charter com

an urgent summons from film
maker George Lucas.
When I introduced them,
Tink said to Mark, “She raves
about you. I have never heard
speak higher of a person that
she does of you.”
I was glad that Mark Martin
had a well-earned place in the
eulogy of a man who was as
nice and likeable as he was. It
gave me a smile in the midst of
such sorrow.
Later, at a reception, I re
marked to a friend, “That was
THE perfect Southern funeral.”
And it was.

Talk about a life truly well-
lived. Though short,Michael’s
