BC Bears headed for
playoffs as third seed
BEN ROBERTS

The Bears are two-thirds of
the way through their three-
games in 10 days and have so
far split the first two games
with a win and a tough loss in
overtime.
Burke County defeated New
Hampstead last Wednesday,
Oct. 26, in The Bear Den 37-27.
That win ensured that the
Bears would play for either
the number two or three spot
in Region 3-AAAA. To secure
second place, the Bears needed
to beat Wayne County in Jesup
on Monday night.
Burke County fell short in
that effort in overtime 17-16
after making a fourth quarter
comeback.
Senior running back Charlie
Dorsey scored on a 35-yard
run with 7:07 left in the fourth
quarter. Blake Burden’s point
after attempt was good to pull
the Bears within three at 10-7.
Burke County’s defense
would then hold on Wayne’s
ensuing drive. The Bears got
the ball back and with just 3.9
seconds left on the clock, Bur
den hit a 32-yard held goal to
tie the game at 10-10.
It took the Yellow Jack
ets just two plays to score in
overtime. Marshall Flowers
answered with a 15-yard run to
make it 17-16. The Bears opted
to go for the win with a two-
point conversion rather than a
held goal but were unable to
get in the end zone.
Burke County will wrap up
its regular season this Friday,
Nov. 4, on the road against
Southeast Bulloch. Win or lose,
the Bears are expected to be the
number 3 seed from Region
3-AAAA. They will travel to
play the number 2 seed from
Region 4 in the first round
of GHSA playoffs beginning
Nov. 11.
Marshall Flowers scores on a quarterback keeper in overtime against Wayne County Monday
night.
