President Carol Jones is ask
ing for the community’s help
in making sure Jones Lake
goes with the flow.
“It’s open to the public for
people to fish, for boating,
picnicking and kayaking,” she
said. “It’s a beautiful scenic
part of Waynesboro.”
Jones Lake was built in 1956
on property donated to the
Community Betterment Coun
cil (CBC) by John J. Jones.
The Spring Valley, Lake
Bluff and Dogwood Drive
neighborhoods were devel
oped around the new lake. In
the earliest days, the lake was
deep enough to host water ski
ing competitions.
The CBC still exists and
still owns the lake. The cur
rent officers are: Carol Jones
(President), Mike Bickley
(Vice President), Danny Bon-
nell (Treasurer) and Jami Mc
Millan (Secretary). The group
meets once or twice each year
to address the needs of the
lake.
Currently, the CBC is raising
money toward a $75,000 proj
ect to pay for the restoration
of McIntosh Creek. Over the
years, stagnation has caused
the lake to fill in, resulting in
the loss of about four acres.
Presently, the two creeks
which feed the lake are not
flowing freely. As the creeks
bog down, land to the south
of the lake becomes swampy,
and the lake itself loses water
flow and volume. Two more
acres are very much in danger

Jones Lake after a heavy rain April 2020.
of being lost.
Battling weeds for years,
the CBC needs to take a much
bigger step to address the root
cause of the lake's problems.
Working with the Army Corps
of Engineers and with special
ized contractors, they have a
firm plan and bid to restore
the flow of McIntosh Creek,
which feeds the lake on its
southwest end. Bogged down
with fallen trees, the McIntosh
is acting more like a swamp
than a creek. The best place to
witness the blockage is on the
comer of 4th Street and Spring
Valley Roads.
“Because there is not a lot of
water flow, the lake is filling in
and it’s not staying healthy,”
Jones said.
Financially, the CBC is sup
ported entirely by donations
and grants. There is no hom
eowner's association for the
nearby neighborhood, and
only a few of the home owners
donate to the lake. The City of
Waynesboro is the biggest do
nor, contributing a CBC grant
of $3,000 per year. The CBC’s
hope is that once they have
secured a significant amount
toward the project costs, they
will apply for various grants.
However, fundraising is dif
ficult because the homeowners
generally believe the City of
Waynesboro should be re
sponsible for the lake, and the
general public thinks that the
homeowners should be respon
sible, said Jones.
Donations may be made

com campaign called "Support
Jones Lake".
“My husband and I have
lived on the lake for about 15
years, and it has been both a
blessing and curse,” said Jones.
“I've seen the lake at its worst,
when it is choked with weeds,
with stagnant and smelly water.
Since being involved in the
CBC, I'm proud of the progress
we have made at improving the
health of the lake. It's a haven
for wildlife and a source of
peaceful enjoyment for the
people around it.”
