County agrees to less for more $

Only Commissioner Art
Lively questioned why the
County would pay $25,000 for
about half as much land than
previously negotiated.
In August, the BOC autho
rized staff to offer $25,000 for
the purchase of five acres of
property from James Dixon.
Tax maps showed the entire
parcel to be six acres. How
ever, when the survey was
completed the original parcel
is 4.62 acres and Dixon wants
to sell only the front 2.62 acres.
County Manager Merv Wal
drop suggested that the BOC
may want to renegotiate a
lower price based on $5,000
per acre. The renegotiated
price would have saved the
county $11,900.
However, the panel, with
the exception of Lively, voted
to approve the sale without
negotiations.
“If the owner was willing to
take $5,000 for roughly five
acres, have we countered it?”
Lively asked.
Commissioner Tommy Nix,
who moved to approve the
sale, said the land deal always
involved a $25,000 firm price
tag and never was negotiated
on a per acre basis.
“But if we are getting only
half of what the original pro
posal was, shouldn’t we try
to negotiate it,” Lively asked
again. “We are getting only half
of what we thought we were
getting. That’s a pretty poor
real estate deal.”
Without further discus
sion Commissioner Lucious
Abrams seconded the motion
and all but Lively voted in
favor of the purchase.

Duck season opens
this Saturday
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Re
sources Division announced that the state’s duck season opens
this Saturday, Nov. 19.
“Waterfowl hunters should note a few bag limit changes this
year - the hooded merganser restriction has been removed, so
‘hoodies’ can account for any or all of the merganser bag limit
of five per day,” said Kara Nitschke, migratory gamebird biolo
gist. “Additionally, the sea duck limit has been reduced to four
per day, only three of which may be scoters, long-tailed ducks,
or eiders and only one may be a female eider.”
Duck season dates are Nov. 19-27 and Dec. 10 - Jan. 29. Full
migratory bird hunting regulations can be found at GeorgiaWild-
life .com/migratory-bird-info.
What licenses do you need to hunt waterfowl in Georgia? You
need a Georgia hunting license, a Georgia migratory bird license,
and a federal duck stamp (now available when you purchase your
other recreational licenses). WRD has made your purchase deci
