Two men busted big for selling drugs

A Grand Jury indicted Ira
Kenneth Dixon on two counts
of child molestation after he
was accused of inappropri
ately touching a child under
the age of 16 years old on two
900 block of Martin Luther
King Jr. Blvd May 17.
During the search, deputies
confiscated a large quantity
of crack cocaine and two il
legal firearms. Patterson was
arrested without incident and
charged with two counts of
possession of a firearm by a
convicted felon, theft by re
ceiving a stolen firearm and
possession of cocaine with the
occasions between 2014 and
December 21,2021.
Seventy-six-year-old Dixon
pled guilty last month to both
charges. Superior Court Judge
Amanda Heath sentenced Dix
on to 20 years of probation for
each charge, to run concur
rently. Dixon was also ordered
intent to distribute.
In a separate narcotics search
on Wallace Street Friday, May
19, Alphonse Fredrick Birdine
was charged with possession
of Marijuana with intent to
distribute, possession of Meth-
amphetamine with intent to
distribute, possession of Mari
juana with intent to distribute
within 1,000 feet of a housing
project, possession of Meth-
to pay a $5,000 fine. Part of the
special conditions of the proba
tion require Dixon to make no
contact with the victim and
subject him to house arrest for
the entirety of the probation
period.

BURKE EMA REPORT
The Burke County Emergency Management Agency
responded to 84 patients’ calls during the week ending
May 21.
Of those, 57 resulted in transports, including 35 to Au
gusta hospitals and one to another out-of-county hospital.
Nineteen of the transports were determined to be emergen
cies and 38 were non-emergent.
The agency also answered 22 fire calls during the week.
They included two fire/smoke alarms, one outside trash/
waste/dumpster fire, seven rescues, two structure fire, four
trees down, two public service calls and four unspecified
calls.
Student assaults officer
Just after noon Tuesday, May
16 school resource officers got
a call to the mall area of Burke
County High School for a dis
ruptive student.
The male juvenile-aged stu
dent became agitated and as
saulted the officer. The officer
then called for backup and the
student got physical with the
second officer and was taken
into custody without further
incident. No other students,
staff or faculty were adversely
affected. No weapons were
involved.

Alexander Sturkie, 30, was
pumping gas at the Corner
Store on 6th Street May 12
when Robert McCafferty
grabbed him by the neck, ac
cording to an incident report.
McCafferty, 42, took Sturkie
to the ground and choked him
allegedly over Sturkie com
municating with McCafferty’s
wife via social media months
ago. Video footage obtained
by the Burke County Sheriff’s
Office shows McCafferty ap
proaching Sturkie and then
punching him. A witness at
the gas station attempted to
pull McCafferty off Sturkie.
McCafferty was arrested and
charged with battery and ag
gravated assault.
McCafferty rents out a 6th
Street building to the BCSO
to house their training center.
Grants
$2,200,000 for a proposed
project making enhancements
to the existing 6th Street Park.
The city intends to foster these
improvements by decreasing
barriers of recreational par
ticipation and by promoting
and encouraging more citizen
access.
Sardis- $1,268,850
The City of Sardis proposed
improvements to the existing
Girard Avenue Park, built in
the late 1950s. The parcel is
triangular and is bounded by
Chatham Street, Girard Av
enue, and Screven Street, just
off Charles Perry Ave (SR24),
the main thoroughfare through
downtown. The park serves an
area that has a poverty rate of
29.4%. The city was awarded
$647,350 for improvements to
the park.
The City of Sardis also pro
posed improvements to the
existing Annie Fluellen Park,
located on Bargeron Street,
just off Charles Perry Ave
