Agricultural showings promote life skills
SHELLIE SMITLEY

Participating in animal agri
culture organizations provides
students with more than just
the knowledge of how to raise
animals.
The 9th annual Burke Coun
ty Bird Dog Classic Diary
Heifer Show took place Sat
urday, December 30 at the
BSC Arena. The event is a
commercial dairy heifer com
petition in which children from
4th through 12th grades who
participate in FFA or 4H show
their female calves. There is
a showmanship class and a
weight class. To participate, the
calves must be born between
March 1 and September 30 of
the same year in which they
are shown.
SHOWMANSHIP
During the showmanship
competition, the judge decides
how well the calves and their
students work together. Fitting
includes a shave that leaves
the heifers with a top line that
resembles a Mohawk and a lon
ger underbelly that gives them
a fuller look. Fike a fashion
show for cows, judging is also
based on how well the calves
are btted.
Showmanship categories in
clude eight classes with fourth
and fifth graders combined.
Every other grade through
twelfth competes separately.
Showmen dress in all white
clothing, reminiscent of the
milkmen delivery uniforms of
previous decades.
“They look at the cleanliness
and how well you work to
gether, it’s a true partnership,”
former competitor Ashlyn Red
dick said “It is like a dance. It
takes two to tango and if your
partner is not working well that
day, you are not going to place
as high as what you think you
should.”
WEIGHT CLASS
The weight class competition
is based on the confirmation
of the heifers and their poten
tial for milk production. The
classes are divided by ranges
depending on the weights of
the calves that are entered.
Typically, there are 10 weight
categories divided by 50 lb.
increments.
“It has nothing to do with the
showmanship, but if you are a
better showman, you can show
the flaws out of the calf and
make it place higher,” Ashlyn
said. “It’s based on how long
it’s going to last on the dairy
(farm) because these are pro
duction animals.”
THE VALUE OF
PARTICIPATION
Students who actively en
gage in agricultural groups and
partake in ag-sport events, like
the Bird Dog Classic, develop
life skills and form friendships
throughout the state. Children
do not have to live on farms
to participate either. Often
schools provide bams for urban
students who choose to show
farm animals.
“When I say my child was
a hermit, he was a hermit who
did not come out of his house,”
said Tina Sizemore, mother
of Braedon Sizemore. The
family lives in Elbert County.
Years ago, the Bird Dog Clas
sic show was Braedon’s first
attempt at showmanship. This
year, he was hunting with fel
low showmen in Burke County
the morning before the event.
Ashlyn showed animals for
12 years. Fast year, she gradu
ated from Burke County High
School, but returned to the
event this year to mentor stu
dents while she is on winter
break from college. She is
studying animal science at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural
College and hopes to get ac
cepted to veterinarian school
after she graduates.
“I’m just here to help, if
they need me in the ring,”
she stated. “These are young
calves and this is the first show
for most of them. So, if (the
student competitors) need help
getting their calves around the
ring because they are not broke
all the way, I will give them
that push.”
Ashlyn strongly believes in
the value of the FFA and 4H
programs. Taking charge of
the care and training of the
animals she showed taught her
time management skills and
required her to take responsi
bility.
“It impacted my life greatly,”
Ashlyn said. “It taught me so
many valuable life lessons.”
Kim Reddick and Shelley
Coble are the directors of the
dairy heifer event. For the past
three years, they have awarded
scholarships to students who
apply. Also, competitors are
awarded with prizes and cash.
This year, was the largest show
to date with nearly 90 calves
coming from various parts
of the state. Additionally, the
competitors typically arrive in
Burke County the night before,
bringing in revenue for local
businesses.
“Everything we take in, we
give back to the kids,” Kim
Reddick stated. “This is a dy
ing industry and we are trying
to bring as much back into it
as we can. We are trying to
promote it.”
SUPPORTING THE EVENT
Dairy farms and local and
nonlocal businesses donate
money for cash prizes and
items that are sold during
a silent auction. Parents of
both current and past students’
volunteer. Every five years,
local community leaders and
business owners are asked to
participate in a celebrity show.
Next year, it will happen in
commemoration of the show’s
10-year anniversary.
