JULY 19
After an executive session
Monday, the Waynesboro City
Council voted unanimously to
accept a settlement agreement
that included a $300,000
payout to Former Waynesboro
Police Major Gary Jones.
The payout includes $4,500
designated as back wages. The
city will dish out approximately
$50,000 and insurance will pay
the remaining balance. The
city also agreed to contact
the Georgia Peace Officer
Standards and Training
Council (POST) to change
Jones’s status from termination
to voluntary resignation.
Obituaries included James
Ralph “Jimmy” Johnson,
William Lindsey Parrish,
Schenley Hilton, Henry Lakes,
Jr. and Carolyn Ruth Wright
Carpenter.
JULY 26
The Board of Commissioners
directed their staff NOT to
make salary adjustments after
they asked the Sheriff to hold
off on promotions until the next
fiscal year.
The decision not to pay the
raises is related to the Burke
County Sheriff’s Office’s/
Detention Center budget
statuses.
Obituaries included Matthew
Francis Lovett and Cecilia
Travis.
AUGUST 2
The Columbia County
Sheriff’s Office Force
Investigation Team is
investigating an incident that
led to the death of Freddie
Walker after he was tased by
Burke County Sheriff’s Office
deputies.
A non-public meeting
Monday, in which
Commissioners Art Lively and
Evans Martin met with Sheriff
Alfonzo Williams, might pave
the way for a productive public
budget work session later this
month.
“There were no commitments
made,” County Manager Merv
Waldrop said of Monday’s
meeting. “It was productive in
that it was civil. I don’t know
that it moved anything one way
or the other, but at least we are
talking.”
Obituaries included Teresa
A. Gaiser, Vince Gray, Sr.,
Clevester Butler, Dave Brown,
Jr. and Angela Lee Hopkins-
Roberts.
AUGUST 9
A July 25 letter addressed
to County Manager Merv
Waldrop and Human Resource
Director Renee Milligan
indicates that a former Burke
County Sheriff’s employee has
retained an Atlanta law firm to
represent her on accusations
that she was sexually harassed
by Sheriff Alfonzo Williams.
The letter, signed by attorney
Job Milfort of the Prioleau
& Milfort law firm, gave
the Burke County Sheriff’s
Office’s attorney until August
1, 2023, to discuss the matter
and explore the possibility of
resolving the potential claims
prior to litigation.
Obituaries included James
Lee “Maine Faulk” Abrams,
Sr., and Jimmie Roger Spires
AUGUST 16
Secretary of State Brad
Raffensperger spoke during
the Chamber of Commerce’s
Lunch & Learn event at the
Waynesboro Ice Plant August
10.
Raffensperger’s discussion
centered around the function
of his office, including the
issuing of approximately 140
business related licenses.
He said reforms now allow
business owners to renew their
corporations for up to three
years at a time.
During the Austin Rhodes
radio program August 11,
Sheriff Alfonzo Williams
blamed FBI, GBI and WRDW
investigations along with
articles in The True Citizen on
former Chief Deputy Lewis
Blanchard and former Sheriff
Greg Coursey.
“The truth is that the person
who now wants my job was
a part of my administration,”
Williams said of Blanchard,
who is rumored, but not
confirmed, to be running
against him in the next election.
“The former sheriff that is
behind a lot of this (who) is
very evil and mean spirited.
Rhodes accused The True
Citizen of not “going after”
Coursey despite what Rhodes
says was an administration
riddled with problems.
“I can tell you they are in
collusion with them now,”
Williams said of The True
Citizen and Coursey.
Obituaries included Verlan
Harrison Young, Randy Tapley,
John W. Dukes, Charles Arthur
Johnson, Jeanette Mallard
Click, Kenneth Wayne
Caldwell and Lucy Mae Hector.

FOREVER
IN OUR
HEARTS
A limb has fallen
from the tree,
We keep hearing a
voice that says,
"Grieve not for
me. "Remember
the best times, the
laughter, the song,
The good life I
lived while I was
strong."
LOVE,

Sons: Trey and Trenton
Daughter-in-laws: Valencia and ShaQuala

games at Burke County High
School.
So far this school year, BCSO
has responded to four incidents
of fights stemming from gang
activity within the high school.
Four adults and five juveniles
have been charged with Affray,
Disrupting a Public School,
and Unlawful Gang Activity.
Additionally, two have been
arrested and warrants are out
for others involved. The BCSO
is expecting more charges to
follow.
“Our agency will not tolerate
any violent altercations and
all parties will be taken into
custody,” a press release stated.
AUGUST 30
The Burke County Sheriff’s
Office announced a new open
records policy August 25,
as the agency progressively
moves toward disseminating
only what information they
choose to release.
Sheriff Alfonzo Williams
told radio host Austin Rhodes
August 11 that his agency was
cooperative with providing
information to The True
Citizen. However, shortly
thereafter the BCSO stopped
providing weekly mug shots
and incident reports, two items
the department has willingly
delivered by email for years.
It is not uncommon for law
enforcement agencies to
provide incident reports to
media outlets via email on
behalf of transparency. In fact,
The True Citizen automatically
receives reports from Columbia
County Sheriff Clay Whittle’s
agency every week.
Obituaries included Peggy
Mallard Chandler, Margaret
Williams Gould, Savalas
Latravius Davis, Jr. and
Deborah “Debbie” Oliver
MacDonald.
