The Bears basketball team
played their first series of
games of 2024, going 2-0 last
week, and advancing to 1-0 in
their region. Bryce Wimberly
continues his phenomenal se
nior campaign, scoring twenty-
eight points over the spread of
two games, and leading the
Bears in points-per-game with
almost fifteen, held goal per
centage with 54%, rebounds-
per-game with six, and blocks-
per-game with almost two.
The Bears welcomed Wayne
County to the Bear Den Lriday
night for their first region game
and beat the Jackets 70-65.
They then traveled to Screven
County for their second match
up of the season and beat them
67-50 to advance to 2-0 against
the Gamecocks on the year.
In the Wayne County
game, the Bears were led
by La’Quinton Morgan with
twenty points, Brice Wimberly
with seventeen points, Brytin
Jones with sixteen points,
and Carlos Lambert with ten.
Kelly Williams led the Bears
in the assist category with four,
while Bryce Wimberly tallied
a whopping sixteen rebounds!
Bryce also had four blocks on
the night, and Brytin Jones had
three steals.
Speaking with head coach
Purvis Dukes, he said, “I
thought the guys did a tre
mendous job of overcoming
some early hot shooting from
Wayne.” Wayne had five of six
of their first-made held goals
come from the three-point arc.
“After being down by fourteen
at one point, the guys kept
plugging and we were able to
go into halftime tied,” Dukes
continued. Dukes also raved
about La’Quiton Morgan’s
performance, saying that he
made some big shots when
the team needed it; he also
mentioned Bryce Wimberly’s
stellar night, putting up an
impressive double-double;
Brytin Jones also had a good
night against Wayne, scoring
a career-high in points and
being a massive presence de
fensively.

The season continues this
week as the Bears play two
games. Last night, they wel
comed their biggest region
contender in Benedictine. The
Cadets always stand between
the Bears and their shot at
winning region, so chances
are it was a good game (more
on that next week.) They will
also travel to Savannah to play
against New Hampstead on
Lriday. The Phoenix are no
pushovers either, as they are
positive on the year with a 64%
win rating. They are also 1-0
in region having taken down
Southeast Bulloch last Lriday.
Lor those looking to support
the Bears at a home game,
