SEPTEMBER 27
A Facebook post promoting
a story published in The True
Citizen last week about $2 bills
had the phone at Fleetwood
Coin & Jewelry ringing off
the hook. The Facebook
post, shared more than 725
times, reached more than
108,000 people. The True
Citizen directed inquiries to
Fleetwood Coin & Jewelry
with the owners Steven and
Connie Nix’s permission after
people began calling The True
Citizen about cashing in their
$2 bills. One woman called the
coin shop from Oklahoma after
seeing the post. Steven said the
shop received approximately
85 calls regarding $2 bills after
the story was published.
Obituaries included Patricia
Carolyn Twiggs.

Peach Pit Cantina is hosting
a hiring event in anticipation
of the Tex-Mex restaurant’s
grand opening in Waynesboro
next month.
Owner Ana Segura is excited
about bringing the new Tex-
Mex restaurant to the Bird
Dog Capital. She is also the
owner of Chilitos Mexican
Grill in Sylvania. It is due to
the prompting of Burke County
customers that she decided
to open the new restaurant in
downtown Waynesboro.
Obituaries included Gerald
Ray Saxon, Onzlee Williams,
Jesse Allen, Curtis Hollins,
Wayne Flournoy and Richard
“Ricky” Atwell.
OCTOBER 11
The Secretary of State’s
Office cleared the Burke
County Board of Elections and
former Elections Supervisor
Laverne Sello on allegations
made by Brenda Lewis and
Doris Tongo in reference to the
November 2019 race.
According to an
Investigations Division
Summary, Lewis and Tongo
alleged there were 148
unaccounted absentee ballots,
some absentee ballots were
intentionally mailed late and
the number of voters were
fewer than the number reported.
However, the SOS
department said the
investigation did not reveal
any evidence to support the
local Board Elections violated
Georgia Election Code, despite
22 absentee ballots that were
not mailed out within three
business days after receiving
the applications.
Obituaries included Jerry
Donald McGuire and Shamisha
LaCole Baugh Ward.
OCTOBER 18
Public Works Director Jody
Ellison recently approached
Waynesboro officials with the
city’s struggle to hire qualified
personnel.
“We are short in pretty much
all positions,” he said recently.
During a combined city
department meeting October
2, Ellison voiced his frustration
with hiring a mechanic, stating
he had given up on filling the
position that remains vacant
after six months. The position’s
starting pay is $16 per hour,
but is negotiable, and does
not include diesel repairs.
Primarily, the mechanic would
change oil and complete minor
repairs on lightweight vehicles.
Recent applicants include
people who only know how to
change oil and are looking for
wages around $25 per hour.
Ellison said the city cannot
find a backup sanitation driver
either.
Obituaries included Norbert
“Bugg” Alvin Tobias and Mary
Ruth Farrow.
OCTOBER 25
During the August 28 budget
work session, the Board of
Commissioners addressed
the jail crisis that costs the
taxpayers thousands of dollars
a month to house inmates in
other counties.
A search of the Burke County
Sheriff’s Office’s online inmate
inquiry shows a group of seven
inmates who were arrested
between January 1, 2018 and
December 31, 2021 and are
still sitting in jail.
Obituaries included Donna
L. Knight.
