Last Saturday, Burke County
hosted the annual Ronald Mc
Donald House Border Bowl in
the Bear den. This is a game
in which Georgia’s best senior
athletes compete against South
Carolina’s best senior athletes
in a game of football.
Burke County had five foot
ball players place, including
RB/WR Jensen Brantley, RB/
WR Jaremy Richardson, WR
Ronderius Gray, OL Chase
Allen, and LB Brandon Lively.
BCHS also had five cheer
leaders representing Burke
County High School at the
Border Bowl. Kameria Wesby,
Stalayah Crawford, Tommie
Conner, Catelyn Rodriquez,
and Kameryn Cooper.
The Georgia team won this
year 21-0, extending their win
streak to three over the South
Carolina team and evening the
series at five apiece in total.

The BCHS girls wrestling
team finished third Friday night
at Greenbrier in their region
competitions. The Lady Bears
beat Long County 42-30, lost
to Greenbrier 21-60, and lost
the second place match with
Richmond Hill 30-42. “Our
girls wrestled hard on Friday
night,” said head coach Daniel
Hance, “I’m proud of their ef
fort, and now we are going to
gear up for the traditional indi
vidual tournament that starts in
early February.”
Boys also finished third in
their region duel on Saturday.
The Bears beat New Hamp
stead 42-36, lost to Benedictine
9-69, and lost to Wayne County
36-46. “In the Wayne County
duel,” said Hance, “it came
down to the last match.” The
score was Wayne County 40
Burke 36, and had the boys
been able to get a pin, they
would have won 42-40. “Our
boys wrestled good all day,”
Hance continued, “I’m proud
of the fight in our boys. None
of them gave up, and we, as a
coaching staff, are excited for
our future!”
This week the Bears and
Lady Bears travel to Glenn
Hills on Tuesday, and their
final home match verses ARC
and Glenn Hills will be on
January 30.

The Lady Bears only had
one scheduled game last week,
facing off against New Hamp
stead on the road. They arose
victorious, winning their fourth
consecutive game, beating the
Lady Phoenix 48-33. With this
win, the Lady Bears are now
2-0 in their region
Among the list of super-
stars, there are some familiar
faces. Deondra Page led the
Lady Bears with eighteen
points; Tre’Yonna Jones fol
low closely with twelve points;
and Londyn Williams had
eleven points. “After opening
the game with a narrow 13-12
lead after one quarter,” said
head coach Leslie Lawrence,
“the Lady Bears came up
big on defense in the second
quarter.” The Lady Bears out-
scored them 18-5 and took a
31-17 lead at the half. The two
teams played pretty evenly in
the second half, but the Lady
Bears prevailed.
Like the boys, the Lady
Bears traveled yesterday to
Southeast Bulloch to try and
extend their win streak to five
games and improve to 3-0 in
their region against a win
less, last place Yellow Jackets
team. They then look to do the
same at home on Friday night
against a winless Islands team.
It is safe to say that the future
of this Lady Bears team looks
pretty bright. Be sure to come
out Friday at six to watch the
Lady Bears take on the Lady
Sharks.

BC Bears fall to 1-1 in region

The Burke County Bears
basketball team had two games
scheduled for last week. Their
region matchup on Tuesday
was canceled due to severe
weather. This game has been
moved to a later date in Feb
ruary. Despite similar weather
conditions on Friday, they still
traveled to Savannah to face
off against New Hampstead.
Overall, the Bears fell short,
losing 66-81, and evening out
at 1-1 in their region.
Brytin Jones and Kelly
Williams led the Bears with
fourteen points each. Bryce
Wimberly trailed closely with
twelve. On a more support
ive side, Carlos Lambert and
Cayden “CJ” Jackson each had
five rebounds, and La’Quinton
Morgan had six assists.
The Phoenix outrebounded
the Bears 37/25. “We felt like
rebounding and free throws re
ally hurt us in this game,” said
head coach Purvis Dukes. The
Bears were 16-28 from the free
throw line while the Phoenix
were 21-23. Turnovers also
played a big role in the loss,
as the Bears turned the ball
over seventeen times. Some
silver-lining in that instance
is that the Phoenix also turned
the ball over seventeen times.
However, it becomes much
harder to win a game if you
are constantly giving the other
team the ball. “We just never
could get over the hump in
the second half,” said Dukes,
“and when you play on the
road in this region, you have
to be strong.” The Phoenix
were ranked eighth in the state
and the Bears were ranked
ninth, and up until this point,
the Bears had a perfect re
cord against New Hampstead.
“Their guys were ready to
protect their home court,” said
Dukes. He also expressed con
cern in being sure to improve
in all aspects of the game, but
most importantly, free throws,
turnovers, and rebounds.
The Bears played another
region game last night against
Southeast Bulloch in Brooklet.
The Yellow Jackets are 8-7 on
the year but 0-2 in region, rank
ing fifth overall. Tune in next
week for more on that game.
Their next home game is on
Friday January 19 against a
struggling Islands team. They
are 6-7 on the year, and 0-2
in region, ranking sixth. Be
sure to come out and support
the Bears. The boys game will
begin around 7:30.
