Bears basketball team goes 2
BRANNON BRADDOCK

The Bears went 2-1 this
week, dropping anoth
er region game against
Southeast Bulloch. All-
in-all, the Bears played
well as Bryce Wimberly
continues his stellar se
nior campaign and many
Bears, like La’Quinton
Morgan and Cayden “CJ”
Jackson, are starting to
find their stride and come
up big for the Bears in
certain games.
In the Southeast Bulloch
game, the Bears were led
by Bryce Wimberly with
sixteen points, Cayden
“CJ” Jackson with sixteen
points, and Kelly Wil
liams with eleven points.
Wimbery also led the team
in rebounds with ten while
Carlos Lambert and Kelly
Williams each had six.
Several Bears includ
ing La’Quinton Morgan,
Kelly Williams, Carlos
Lambert, and Brytin Jones
each had four assists.
Bryce Wimberly also
led the Bears with three
blocks. “We played well
enough to win,” said head
coach Purvis Dukes, “but
shot ourselves in the foot
several times late in the
game with key turnovers
and missed free throws.”
The Bears were 6/13 from
the foul line, which is
huge when playing close
games against good op
ponents. Ultimately, the
Bears lost 62-69.
Friday at home against
Islands “the guys respond
ed well after dropping two
games in a row.” Back
under the lights of the
Bear Den, Burke County
took out some frustration
on a mid Islands team,
winning 82-60. Derrick
“DJ” Streetman led the
Bears with seventeen
points. Bryce Wimberly
followed closely with
sixteen. Wimberly put up
his second double-double
of the week, grabbing ten
rebounds. Cayden “CJ”
Jackson and Derrick “DJ”
Streetman had five apiece.
La’Quinton Morgan, in
addition to having thirteen
points, also had ten assists,
obtaining his own double
double statline-his first of
the year. “Defensively we
felt like they did a great
job of containing their two
leading scorers and any
time you defend well and
share the ball you have
a shot at winning,” said
Dukes. Dukes also raived
about his offense, saying
that “four guys in double
figures is tough to guard.”
Dukes was perhaps most
impressed with the way
his team played from the
free-throw line, shooting
a season-best 20/24.
Saturday night was an
other tough opponent in
Jenkins County on the
road, and the Bears nar
rowly escaped with a 48-
46 victory. “The game
was tight throughout and
we shot the ball from the
foul line horribly,” said
Dukes as we were 9/24
from the free-throw line.
The game went down
to the last seconds, as
the Bears’ Cayden “CJ”
Jackson saw an opening
with three seconds left.
1 on the week
Jackson rebounded the
ball off of a missed shot,
and laid it up for a win
at the buzzer. “Cayden
needed that,” said Dukes,
“because he’s struggled
some in practice the last
couple days.” DJ Street-
man and Bryce Wimberly
were once again the lead
ing scorers with thirteen
and eleven respective
ly. Bryce had his third
double-double in a row
with twelve rebounds, and
Streetman was close to
one of his own with seven
rebounds. Other notable
statlines were La’Quinton
Morgan with five assists
and Bryce Wimberly with
three blocks.
The Bears continue this
week, facing off against
Wayne County in Jesup
and Benedictine in Sa
vannah. It’s going to be a
tough week for them, and
Coach Dukes says, “We
have to continue working
hard and understanding
the importance of taking
care of business at home
and on the road.” The
next opportunity to sup
port the Bears at home
comes next week as the
Bears play two games at
home. Their first will be
New Hampstead on Janu
ary 30, as teh Bears look
to see revenge against
the Pheonix. They also
face off against Southeast
Bulloch on February 2, as
the Bears once again seek
revenge for the last time
the two teams met.
Lady Bears basketball team goes 2-1, ending their win streak
BRANNON BRADDOCK

The Lady Bears have been
one of the hottest teams in the
region as of late, really finding
their mid-season stride and
playing well in region. This
past week, they went 2-1, of
ficially ending their six-game
win streak, but still remaining
undefeated in their region.
Last Tuesday, they absolute
ly crushed Southeast Bulloch
with an overall score of 75-15.
Londyn Williams continues her
phenomenal inaugural year,
scoring twenty-six points.
Tre’yonna Jones has a great
game too, being one point shy
from a ten-point, ten-assist
double-double. Deodra Page
scored eighteen points.
Their game on Friday against
Islands was won in like-fash-
ion, as the Lady Bears won
by sixty points in an 85-20
blowout. Familiar names lead
the stat sheets with Londyn
Williams and Destinee’ Smith
scoring sixteen points each,
Tre’yonna Jones scoring elev
en points (and nine assists), and
Deondra Page scoring thirteen
points.
Their last game of the week
was an away game in Jenkins
County on Saturday. The Lady
Bears narrowly lost, com
ing up just short in a 37-40
game. “I feel we got ahead of
ourselves a little bit at Jenkins
County,” said head coach Les
lie Lawrence, “We were not
focused or prepared for what
we encountered.” Londyn
Williams scored over half of
the Lady Bears’ points with
twenty. Tre’yonna Jones had
eight points.
Moving forward, the hope is
that Jenkins County gave the
Lady Bears a reality check,
and they can continue to play
high-caliber ball. This reality
check may have come at the
right time because the Lady
Bears play at Wayne County
this week (yesterday), and
that game will have major
implications on which team
will go into the tournament
as the number one seed. For
those looking to support the
Lady Bears at a home game,
they play two region match
ups next week. Tier first of the
week will be on Tuesday, as
the Lady Bears look to go 2-0
against the New Hampstead
Pheonix on the year. Their sec
ond matchup will be on Friday,
and they also look to go 2-0
against the Southeast Bulloch
Yellow Jackets on the year.
Games start at six, so be sure
to show up early to support the
Lady Bears.

about Jenkins’ love for the city.

she calmed many storms when
she was here.”
