Tickets on sale now for annual Wimberly gala
Tickets are on sale now for
one of the county’s tastiest
events.
The Wimberly House Minis-
tries’ annual gala, “A Taste of
Burke County,” is on the books
for Saturday, Feb. 10, from
6:30-11 p.m. The event, put
on by Friends of the Wimberly
House and held at First Lib

will once again feature some
of the best cuisine offered by
local restaurants and cater

and appetizers to samples of
mouthwatering entrees.
The fundraiser, which is the
ministry’s largest each year,
will feature over a dozen re

Quality Seafood, Byne Blue
berry Farms, Camino Real, Del
Mac, Elena’s Ooie Gooie Bites,
Finely Seasoned Catering,
Fish Eye Grill, Fuji Sushi and
Steak House, Good Day Cafe,
JJ’s Krazy Nutz, Lakeview
Restaurant, Lou’s on Liberty,
Paulette’s Fine Foods, Pineland
Bakery and the Peach Pit.
In keeping with tradition, the
gala includes both silent and
live auctions as well as live
music. The theme for this year
will be an enchanted forest.
Executive director of Wim
berly House Ministries, Lynn
White, says she is continuously
humbled by the support of the
community at the annual gala.
“We could not do this without
every single person who is

meeting January 17.
Grant pays BCSO to cite seatbelt offenders

The Burke County Sheriff’s
Office will pursue a 1-year
grant aimed at seatbelt usage
and speed reduction.
Captain Brandon Reeves
approached the Board of Com
missioners January 17 during
a called meeting to make sure
the panel was onboard with
applying for the grant before
hand.
Each year the Governor’s
Office of Highway Safety
awards several monetary
grants ranging from $10,000
to $375,000 to various Georgia
agencies. If awarded, the High
Visibility Enforcement Grant
would assist the BCSO by
offsetting a certain percentage
of their salary line item while
conducting target-specific en
forcement efforts. The salary
reimbursement portion would
be repayment for enforcement
hours submitted by employees
assigned to the Traffic Division
of Special Operations. Using
four current traffic vehicles, the
BCSO would be compensated
for hours they are actively
enforcing seatbelt usage and
speed limits.
“If they go out and make
15 seatbelt stops then they are
going to reimburse (us) 12
hours,” said Budget Analyst
Austin Miettunen.
The grant would also assist
with necessary equipment such
as radar and lap top comput
ers. The grant does not require
matching funds. The commis
sioners approved the applica
tion process.
The BOC also approved a
budget amendment that moved
$185,000 from the detention
center salary line item to the
professional services line item.
The budget amendment was
completed to cover inmate
housing costs.
“The Board has gotten used
to the Sheriff’s Office going
overbudget,” County Manager
Merv Waldrop stated.
In other news, a deputy was
involved in a not-at-fault- car
accident last month, resulting
in a total loss of the involved
vehicle. The BOC approved
the use of insurance funds,
SPLOST funding, funds from
confiscated assets and Safety
grant funds to purchase and
outfit a Dodge Charger.
The BCSO will also be pro
viding a list of 16 surplus ve
hicles that will go up for sale
by bid next month.
The Annise Mabry Founda
tion signed an agreement with
the County releasing the BOC
from liability in connection
to installing technological
equipment at the BCSO Head
quarters.
