CALLING NAMES.
II. W. HARDY.
—o—
It is a Yankee trait to call names
when the position of our opponent is
too plain for denial, not capable of
being explained away or mot by ar
gument. It is one of the surest
signs, however, that your enemy is
vanquished and on the run when he
begins to call names, or resorts to
fish-market billingsgate.
Prohibtiouists are now enjoying
tills high vantage ground. There is
nothing left the toe, in the realm of
morals, but to call names.
Religious people call in “Radi
cals,” the politicians “fanatics,"
nnd the liquor dealers “cranks,” and
when a little angry “fools,” “luna
tics,” with perhaps a short swear
word perplexed.
The term radical is really a term
of honor. When a low of the Amer
ican people concluded that slavery
was tin inconsistency’, aud it curse to
the nation, to tlio slave, and to thu
slaveholder, they nt once proposed
to “lay the ax nt tho root of iho evil,"
to abolish it. They proposed to
cut up the institution by tlio root,
hence they wore called root cutters
or radicals. There is not a single
element of comprise, branch prun
ing or license in the make-up of the
term. So with prohibitionists; we
propose to cut up tho saloon by the
root, hence wo glory in the appel
lation “radical.” Which would be
the m >st sensible, to poultice the
red nose to restore natural color, or
stop drinking rum? The doctor who
readies for the cause of the disease
is more to be trusted than lie who
poultices the symptoms.
We arc not ashamed of tho nppal-
Intion “fanatic,” no moro titan of
the term Yankee. It means ex
eesslvely iu earnest. It does not
mean the earnestness of a hireling,
or paid attorney, but the earnestness
of heart and soul. L .ok out upon
tho ravages ol the saloon; if your
heart autl hand arc not moved to
earnest effort you deserve tha fated'
Lot’s wife. You can talk temper
unco, pray temperance, and preach
temperance, but wlteu you propose
to vote Lcmpciunco then you arc a
fanatic. We aro glad to have
earned the title, nnd treasure it
Tite term crunk is not as disgrace
I'ul as one would think. A crank is
licit part ot a machine that turns
tilings. It is usually attached to
the main shaft, and is all on one
side. It has no swivel, weathercock
tendency. The man tliul is solid
on one side of any question is to be
admired. This is the kind of man
to tie to. The llcsli of these half-
ainl-hidj fellows would not answer
for wolf bait,
Sonic will tell you these radical,

unconciously. It deludes with

in the chain that will ultimately

The chain is made up of tiny links.
It is the very smallness of the links
that makos a man or woman be

chain forged by whisky or brandy,
and it fastens the souls in tho same
