The man who opposes good
roads in his county is a back
number.
The man without a ecar,
whether he runs a peanut stand
or a mercantile emporium reaps
some benefit from avtomobile
high ways. Every car that
passes through our city may
carry a prospective customer for
some of them.
A net work of good roads,
running to the county line in
each direction, would soon make
Fitzgerald the city of your
dreams. But you have to put
your shoulder to the wheel and
help push and stop your knock
ing. Not a day passes but the
merchants reap some benefit
from the highways already buiit
into the city and it is up to the
merchants to encourage the
further development of the rural
roads.

ATLANTA TO RAISE
$lO,OOO TO FIGHT
bl INCREASE IN RATES
Atlanta, Nov. 30.—That Atlanta
shippers are very much in earnest in
their fight against the proposed bur
densome advances in freight rates
‘was evidenced at the meeting of rep
resentative manufacturers, wholesale
ers and retailers at the chamber of
commerce assembly hall Monday ev
ening.
This meeting, which was addressed
by some of the leading shippers of
Atlanta, decided to immediately raise
a fund of $lO,OOO as Atlanta’s part of
the ekpense_to be incurred in the
fight, to send a delegation to the con
ference of shippers in Birmingham
Thursday and to also send a strong
delegation along with Colonel W. A.
Wimblish, attorney for the Atlanta
l'frelight bureau, to Washington, to
,join with other cities of the southeastl

commission to suspend the proposed’

tendance upon the meeting that the
first step wonld be for the shippers of
the southeast to apply to the inter
state commerce commission for a sus
pension of its order requiring the new
rates to go into effect January 1, then
for these shippers to have representa
tives appear before the commission
at a hearing and endé@vor to have the
order on the new ' rates set aside.
Should the commission, after a hear
ing decline to_rescind its order on
the proposed rates, it was the sense
of the meeting that the shippers of
the southeast should “apply to the
federal courts. for am ‘injunction to
restrain” the railroads-and interstate
commerce commission from putting
