But there are two tasks perform
ed by the District of Columbia
Chapter of the American Red Cross
which come under the subject of
this paper and concerning which
few Christmas Seal agents through
out the countryhave any knowledge
There exists a postal regulation
forbidding the placing of adhesive
matter on the front or back of
mail matter. Of course, individual
infractions of this rule would pro
bably pass unnoticed, but not so
tke shattering thereof by the bom
bardment of Christmas Seals. Up
oL our personal solicitation each
year since that regulation has been
in force the Postmaster-General
bas suspended the rule for thirty
days—from December Ist to Jan
uary Ist.
Each year the mail issuing from
the White House during Decem
ber carries the seal. Society follows
the custom and seals are not only
used on ordinary mail and invita
tions but also on visiting cards
The most novel use yet made of |
the seals, so far as Washingtou is
concerned, is that to which. tbe‘
American Ice Company put theml
last year: For a few days prior to
Christmas this company placed a
seal on each block of ice sold by it
using several thousands in this‘
way.
