. Better Heed Warning |
There are folks who sneer at anything or at everything, There
are farmers who sneer when any effort is made to improve their mar
kets, or when'legislation is enacted in their behalf. They speak as if
they shought there might be a trick in it or ajoker somewhere. Just
now a good many farmers are sneering at the boll weevil warning
that 1s being Issued by the government officials. Here 1n Colquitt
county we have a good many farmers who are giving very httle heed
to the boll weevil talk and they express their determination to stick to
cotton, weevil or no weevil.—Moultrie Observer. :
If our farmers will not learn by the experiences of others not on
ly will they suffer, but every other institution that directly or indi
rectly depends upon the farmers prosperity for their support, and all‘
of us do._~J. J. Dorminey who owns five thousand acres of land in
Alabama in a courty that has already been infested by the 801 l Weevil
stated to us this week, that planters in that section have practically
been put out of business this year and the banks and business houses
in the towns have proportionately suffered through the inroads made |
by the pest, With the certainty of the approach ofAthe weevil and the
knowledge of the means to obviate its evil effects, itis a crime if our
people do not take time by the forelock and protect themselves againsy
the oncoming disaster. You insure against fire, yet the chance of fire
is slim on the farm, why not insure against the weevil, that is suie to
c)me, by diversifyicg and making hogs and cattle bring you in tbel
money you will need.
Two bills have been introduced at this session of Congress by
Mr. Edwards, representing the Ist District of Georgia that should
have the careful consideration of that body. Both bills are of more
than ordinary interest to the people of this ard all other states, as the
bills Intend to regulate advertising and the levy of a tax upon mail
order houses for the benefit of the States in which they sell their
wares, The gist of the bills is embraced in the following extracts
fromthem: ‘
‘A tax of 3 per cent on the cash value of all goods sold by mail
order houses was provided in a bi!l which defined a mail order house
as a firm corporation or individual doing an interstate business. The
bill requires mail order concerns to submit a statement to the Secre.
tary of the Treasury giving the actual cost and selling price of all
goods. L
The tax thus collected is to be paid to the various states in the
ratio of goods sold in each state, the money to be used for the con
struction and maintenance of good roads and for education, under rules
and regulations prescribed by the states. » »
. Another bill makes it a misdemeanor for any firm, person, or
corporation knowingly to make or disseminate false statements con
cerning merchandise, commodities, sccurities or service whick may
enter into interstate commerce, the penalty to be a fine not exceeding
$l,OOO or a year’s imprisonment or both, The bill covers publication
in a newspaper, periodical form letter or circulation'in any ot.her.form
through the mails. False statements concerning quantity, qhalit.v,
value, merit, use, presentor former price, or the motive of sale are
alike pronibited.”
School News
Examinations are coming hard and |
fast. It seems that if it was not for‘
the two days' intermission, Saturday
and Sunday, there would be somel
nervous break-downs. Two hard
exams a day is about enough for
any one.
Dr. Ford is a promoter of the “hon
or system” in the high schools. The
honor system is all right, tco. When
a boy knows that a teacher is snoop
ing around trying to catch him do
ing something amiss the Irish in
him is always aroused and it seems
«Imost an honor to put something‘
ver. But whén a fellow knows ‘
that his teachers-trusts him and ex
pects him to do the right thing with
out any spying. The pupil who
cheats is certainly pretty bad off.

“Children Have More Need Of
Models Than Of Critics”
Wednesday afternoon the Woman’s Club held an open Education
al meeting in the Carnegie Auditorium to which the public was invited
mothers especially were urged to come, A gocd many but not svrepre
sentative number by any means were present. The Mothers Aid Com.
of the Club had the pragram in ckarge, Mrs, J. E. Andrews, as chair
man presided and was responsible for the splendid opportunity given
the ;;arents and those interested in the well-being of the child. /
Mrs. Andrews spoke on the necessity of cooperation in Home and
School, For some years Mrg. Andrews has been an active member of
the National Mothers Congress; and held the high office of State Pres.
in Alabama during her residence in that state. She was forceful and
convincing in her argument for the need of coopcrati>n in home and
school, Her aim will be reached if from the afternoon’s program the
mothers of Fitzgerald children will be aroused to see their real moth
ers best for the better building of school conditions and co-operation
therein. Dr, Ford then spoke on the adohiscent period of the Boy.
He impressed the critical siage of the male beings experience, how as
he develops he has hardship in adjusting himself to the customs scciety
demands that he conforms, to that for this reason he lacks the equib
brium that comes if he meets with the sympathetic help he must have
to save him for his home, school, church, society. The problems are
not one, it 1s not only the pbysical, mental or social ‘side to be con.
sidered and developed, but all three. Step by step and in each period
of his experience. Dr. Ford stressed the crying need of the father’s
sympathetic icterest iu his son’s affairs and urged tbai.fhese expeviences
of the boy be not treated lightly or carelessly but as”‘if they are the
experiences of men. : | & :
Then Miss Geddes spoke on “‘Our Girls’® Not the problpins' of
girls lives, but the need of training them to dignify and ennoble and
enjoy the sphere that they seem to have been . created for, the home.
Miss Geddes compared the experience of the trained home maker
and the inmates of her home, with that of the untrdined home uiak'er’
[and the inmates of her home. She very bea, utifully; left tae picture of
the happy light in the eye of the present day home maker because her
“‘preparedness” places her in the atmosphere and appreciation she en
joys and deserves. ; _
