')A Progressive Institution
From time to time, our news
papers carry notices of the dif
ferent institutions. of our city
that are not only keeping abreast
of the times, but also making
progressive innovations. We
have heard much of our schools,
of our mercantile establishments,
of our good roads, of scientific
farming, but little of one of the
livest institutions and greatest
factors for good in our midst,
‘namely: The first Baptist
Church.
In the institution, we have one
that is not surpassed by many
churches in cities much larger
than our own. In few cities can
there be found a church more
thoroughly organized, or one en
«gaged in more varied forms of
christian service.
The Plant
The church home is in every
way a modern plant, valued at
$40,000. It is constructed of buff
brick, with slate roof and copper
dome. Leadedart glass windows
mellow the light, while ceiling
ventilators provide a wholesome
atmosphere. The lighting

DO NOT spend your Christmas
money until you have seen these’
new ranges—the best ever offered
for sale in this town. Make your
wife a present of one a few days be
fore Christmas and let her cook your
turkey on it. .
In all this territory you could not
find a more acceptable present for
your wife or family. |
Just think ot the pleasure it would
afford her to have a new and up-to
date range on which to cook your
Christmas dinner. Come to think
of it, why not get it now? Ask her

system is a rare combination,
providing splendid illumination,
and yet because of concealed
lights, a restfulness, withal.
The very best of hot air
furnaces keeps the building com
fortable in the winter, whilea
large fan takes the air from the
basement, drives it over ice and
into the building during the sum
mer. This cooled air is circulat
ed by three large, electric, ceil
ing fans.
Here you are offered the most
comfortable building in the city,
whether the weather be cold or
hot.
As the design, thereisfirst the
main auditorium for public wor
ship with two main entrances.
Then, the Bible School audi
torium, surrounded by sixteen
class rooms. With this splendid
‘equipment, the best of work can
be done. iy

The Plan |
First of all comes the preach
ing service. The morning hour
is at eleven o’clock, while the
evening hour is determined by
the season of the year. At the
morning service, old hymns are
sung, led by a chorus choir, as
sisted by a splendid orchestra,
while all the congregation is
urged to sing. Most of the pas
tor’s morning messages are de
voted to the uplifting of chris
tians, At the evening gather
ing, songs that have more life
and enthusiasm are used, the
same chorus and orchestra lead
ing the congregation in their
praise. The pastor’s messages
at night are almost always
evangelistic. The services, both
morning and evening, are usual
ly only one hour long.
‘ On Wednesday is held what to
‘many has been the most delight
ful of all the services of the
church. During the past year,
the Bock of Actsand the Book of
Romans were studied by chap
ters. Itis our purpose the first
of the year to continue this
method of study. beginning with
the Book of I Corinthians.
The Bible School
Over this department, Mr. T.
J. Griffin presides with splendid
ability and enthusiasm. The
school now has the largest
average attendance of any in the
city. During the present week,
a Teacher Training School is be
ing conducted by Mr. George W.
Andrews of Atlanta, Ga. On
next Sunday, the school will be
thoroughly graded, and in every
way made to conform to the
highest and best ideals of Sun
day School Pedagogy. The hour
of meeting is nine-thirty every
Sunday morning. Then comes
the Womans Missionary Society.
Mrs. E. J. Dorminy is the effi
cient president, This organiza
tion is sub-divided into six circles.
Each of these meets weekly for
study, while the society as a
whole meets on the first Monday
afternoon of each month to trans
act business. Almost all the
women of the church are mem
bers of this organization, andi
splendid work is being done by
them, As parts of this organiza
tion, there are the Misses
Society, the Royal Ambassadops
and the Sunbeams. Like the
parent organization, these also
foster missions. Besides these,
there is the Baptist Young
Peoples Union, which has as its
president, Mr. D. B.- "Nicholson,
Jr. The purpose of this organi
zation is to train our young
people in the doctrines of the
church and the conduct of its
work. Since its re-organization
some months since, it has been
steadily growing in power and
usefulness. They meet one hour
before the preaching service
every Sunday evening.
You are cordially invited to at
tend, and will receive a hearty
welcome to any and all of these
meetings.
Beginning this month, thel
Church will be open at least one
night in every week tothe young‘
people of the community. Here. |
they can not only enjoy social
intercourse, but also indoor
games. You do not have to be a
member of this church to he wel
come. The doors are open to
you.
~ We are planning to begin a
Mission Study class for men
early in January, Just so soon
as this shall have been put into
operation, the pastor purposes
conducting a Friday Night Bible
Class. This will be open to
people of all denominations and
’of no denomination. The object
‘will be the study of the Bible by
books.
In addition to all of the above,
the church has employed Miss
Martha W. Harris, R. N., for
'merly superintendent of Brough
ton’s Hospital, as the pastor’s{
assistant. Miss Harris will not
only visit among our own mem
bers, both well and sick, and
look up new Baptists as they
move into the city, and assist the
pastor in other ways, but she
wil also visit the sick who are
not identified with any church,
relieving any whom she may find
in want, supplying their need
whatever it may be, whether of ‘
clothing, fuel, food, or theatten
tion of a skilled nurse. It is our
desire that no one within our
city shall be neglected. |
