Congressman Lon Livingston
has a republican opponent named
Goree. He brought the gore
from the congressman’s face
last T'uesday.
Goree charged Congressman
Livingston with using his official
position to increase the pay of a
grandson ILeonadas Livingston,
Jr., a postoffice clerk at Con
yers. The republican candidate
in his speech read this paragraph
in the veport of the postmaster
general, after an investigation of
the postoffice department in 1903:
‘ln May, 1900, the member of
congress recommended that the
allowance for separating purpo
ses at Conyers, Ga., which was
then s4oa year, had been in
creased. A count was ordered
and the report showed the office
;entitled to $l6O dollars per
annum; only $2OO, however, was
;__,lowed. The congressman, on
November 29, 1901, called per
‘ ’ and as a result the allow
-8 was increased on December
to $B2O. This increase
,( paid to a clerk, re
} ded by the congressman.
1 1902, the clerk, who
jges receciving $720, was
gtred to a position in
,;ce and the allowance
preduced to $lOO. In
{ 1902, a count was made
licated the office was en
-Is2lo per annum and $2OO
gwed. The above plainly
Strates that the $720 allow
f:j‘"made to give the clerk
pyment and not because of
"\ nt of work in the office.’
W'he charge is, perhaps, true
gough. We have regarded Mr.
ngston as one of those states
n who wrongly confuse states
manship with graft. DBut what
of the administration of the post
office department, that pernfits
such jobbery? If a one-horse
democratic congressman can put
up a job of this kind, then what
would be possible with the
shrewd party man who has a
personal stand in with the de
partment?
In this connection the follow
ing, which we find in another ex
'change on our table, is pertinent.
“The appropriations made for
the postoffice department for
this fiscal year excecd by about
$60,000,000 those of 1896,
“Just for Fun,”
A little girl placed an iron bolt
nut on a railroad track near
Roanoke Va., ‘‘just for fun" she
said ‘'to see the train mash it.”
The engine, baggage and mail
car were derailed and went down
an embankment. The engineer,
fireman and mail clerk were all
more or less injured.

The Steam Whistle Nuisance. |
Notwithstanding the existence
of an ordinance against the pro
miscous blowing of steam whis
tles within the corporate limits,
there are probably few commu
nities so cursed with the nui
sance as this oneis. Evenas we
write, 7:45 a. m., a locomotive
whistle, near by, is being blown
almost constantly. Last night,
betwe2n midnight and day a lo
comotive whistle inside the city
limits, within the space of a few‘
minutes, blew four long blasts
repeatedly at least eight times
making thirty-two long, tiresome
and terrific blasts arousing pro
bably half the sleeping citizens
and terrifying the sick and nerv-}
ous. All night long these whis
tles keep up what appears to be
a conversation as long as there
are more than one fired up. If
ever there is one left alone it
seems to howl at the moon like a
lonesome dog,until the night be
comes hideous.
The mayor has stated that he
will punish the offenders, if
brought before him. The only
thiog to be done is to find some
body to make the cases. We are
thinking of starting a subscrip
tion list to employ a man for that
purpose.
It may become necessary to
occasionally blow a locomotive
whistle, but the continual tooting
and squealing fromB o’clock at
night to 8 a. m., is unnecesary,
unusual and #most unbearable.
Eighty-two jugs, to say noth
ing of the many packages and
boses loaded with whiskey that
were brought to Montezuma Sat
urday by the Southern Express
Co., for parties living in and
around Montezuma., The jugs
ranged in size from a quart to
five gallons. This is prohibition.
—Montezuma Record.
Yes, and even at that, it is a
thousand times better than bar
rooms or a dispensary where the
temptation would be starisg the
drinkers of the stuff in the face
from every direction he put his
focus., The jug business is bad
enough, brother, but it is net as
frequent as the fifteen cent drink
across the bar counter.
When a man receives his jug
he usually carries it to his home
and besides the influence or tem
ptation savid by treating his
friends, he is in several dimes,
and possibly dollars, which he
might spend upon his friquent
visits to town on ‘‘business,”
‘Give us prohibition, even if it is
not as complete as is desired by
the prohibitionists of the true
type.— Vienna News.

HON. JOHN F. DELACY. |
Hon. John F'. DeLacy, Solicitor
General of the Oconee circuit,
whose term of office expires this
year, has made a splendid record l
as a prosecuting attorney during
his incumbency of the office.l
His record is marked by a highl
order of ability. He has been
earnest and zealous in the per-’
formance of the duties of the
office and his success has been I
phenomenal. Col. DeLacy has
made hosts of friends all over the
circuit who will wish him success
and happiness throughout his

The following prosperous
condition is said by the Enter
prise to exist in our sister city
on the A. & B.
“Fitzgerald is at last the
cotton market we have wished to
see it for two or three seasons
past We will double and treble
last season’s receipts, by the
wagon, and a large amount is
being received by rail,not merely
thro the compress, which has all
it can do, but shipments to the!
warehouses for local market. It
is literally comiog from everyi
direction and the more the
buyers get the more they seem
to want, wnich keeps the market
up to and above the limit.” |
| This again reminds us of the
fact Brunswick needs cotton
factors. We are sleeping over
our rights to cllow practically all
of the cotton of Georgia to go to
Savannah for shipment when a
good proportion of in belongs to
us by virtue of our proximity to
the fields of production,—Bruns

This is the last time Judge
Roberts will preside at the su
perior court of Wilcox county as
his term will expire with this
year. Judge Roberts has hosts
of friends in Abbeville and Wil
cox county, who are saddened at
the thought that he has presided
here for the last time. That he
is one of the ablest Judges in the
s'ate and that the administration
of his exalted office has been
marked with distinguished abili
ty and satisfaction to a large ma
jority of the citizens of Abbevilie
and Wilcox county is a well
recognized fact and his friends
here whose name is legion wish
for him in the future health and
happiness, and the full realiza
tion of his aspirations feeling as
sured that he will fill with credit
to himself and honor to his state
any p:sition that the future holds
in store for him. His splendid
record and distinguished service
to the state in the past are the
most elcquent promise of the dis
tinction he will confer on any
position that he may hereafter
