Still Another Railroad
For Fitzgerald.
Railroads, like good business men, know 2
good thing when they see it. In other words,
railroad builders and railroad owners know
where to find business; that is, if they know
enough to make a success. |
Fitzgerald is already a railroad center; its
railroads radiate out like spokes from a hub,
but we are to have another line, an important
one, not a tram road.
The conditions are ripe and the temper of
the people is right and we do not believe that
the exceptional offer that now presents itself
will be allowed to pass unimproved. There is
a rumor out that will not submit to being sup
pressed, that Fitzgerald will take a leading part
in organizing a company to put through a line
from Macon to Valdosta. Itis said that Hawk
insville, Rochelle, Ocilla, Alapaha, Nashville,
Milltown and Valdosta will be interested in the
new project.
Several small local roads, such as the H, &
V.B . F.0&R8,0.&V. and others will be
interested. . The route is direct and the terri
tory most inviting. The greatest sea island
section in the world is along the route of the
proposed line between this place and Valdosta.
mThe eoilis as fine as can be found in the South,

immense duantities of which remain to be

Will Hoke Smith answer the question put
to him by Judge Callaway which is as follows:
“If you succeed a getting the 23,000 votes by
abusing your party and perpetuating the former
partisan bitterness among our peopie who
should be reunited in the democratic party,
will their votes be worth to you the price you are
making the people of Georgia pay for it?”—
Athens Banner.
The plausable point here made by the par
tisan Callaway hasabsolutly nothing to it, for the
reason that nobody is abusing the party. The
abuae is directed at a partisan committee only,
who have done more to perpetuate the partisan
btteriness among our people who should be re
united in the democratic party than every other
influence or agency in this campaign. :I‘hen
why ask “‘will these votes be worth the price the
people are payiog.” The people are not paying
anything except that degree of vigilance that is
said to be the price of liberty, aad they are pay
that with a spirit of alacrity that must Le ap
pallling to the controlling element in the great
political ring that is dominated by corporation at
torneys and paid agents. The party needs and
wants every white vote in the state and if Hoke
Smith does nothing more, he will have earned
the lasting gratitude of the good people of Geor
gia for restoring the twenty three thousand
white voters to the ranks of the democratic
party. ‘The party that stands for white su
premacy.

THE CHILD SHOULD WORK,
Nothing is so wholesome for children “as
something to do.” Now that the school vacat
jon is on this thought should be brought home;
when school is in session they should attend at
every session, if health permits. The work of
any well conducted school is refining and human
izing. They should also be permitted to play.
Play is anatural and necessary expression of
child life; and several hours of it every day
should as far as practical, be spent in the open
air. A playless child should not be thought of.
~ But work is also important. Kvery child
sm)uld have some regular appointed task. The
work should bz usefull. It should be dose
properly and well. Manual labor of some Kkind
is the best;®and it is no objection that it is
arduous enough to tire the young worker,
The child who does not learn to work untii
weary and to persist even beyond that point,
has something very necessary yet to learn. Of
course, however, this should not be pushed too
far.
Goethe, one of the greatest of modern work
ers and thinkers, said: ‘' work that I may not
despair.”” He recoguized both mental aad
physical safety in labor. This is a universal
and necessary lesson.
"Che work of the world is not yet rightly
distributed. Many do too much of it. Some do
far too little. ‘The socialists are not altogether
wrong when they insist that all should do some
of the world’s manual labor and all bave at least
an opportunity to do some of its intellectual
work and share in its artistic work. As the
world grows wiser, tendencies to equalize the
tasks, benefits and enjoyments of labor are as
serting themselves. At all events, every child
should learn to work.—Ex,

HON, HOKE SMITH.
Hon. Hoke Smith will be in Fitzgerald next
Tuesday and will address the people on the is
sues involved in the present gubernatorial cam
paign, The announcment of the date, only a
few days in advance of his visit, precludes the
possibility of properly advertising the event,
but this circumstance, taken in connection
with the facts that 'at this time the
farmers are overwhelmed with farm work and
that there will be no other attraction, will not
prevent the assemblage of a large number of
interested citizens and vaters tohear the speech.
Mr. Smith is one of the greatest campaign
ers of the times, He has left the old ruts and
blazed out a new way ard has proven himself a
master and a leader of great strength. When
you have heard him speak you will understand
why the machinations of the politicians and the
yery active and aggressive machine influences
have failed toobstruct his phenominal campaign
ing career.

| Hon. M. W. Howell.
County treasurer M. W, How
ell died at his home« on South
Grant street in this city early
yesterday morning, after an ill
ness of several months, we might
say more thana year. He has
been on crutches quite awhile
suffering with the ailment that
finally resulted in his death.
‘“‘Uncle Tony” Howell was
perhaps, as universally esteemed
as any man in the county. He
bad just been renominated with
out opposition for the office of
county treasurer for the third
term and the people throughout
the county are saddened at the
news of his death.
He was sixty one years of age
and had been in this section
twenty six years coming here
from North Carolina in 1880.
The funeral took place from
the residence at 9 o’clock con
ducted by Rev. W. L. Wooten,
the interment at Evergreen
cemetery with masonic ceremo
ny at 11 o’clock.
To his family he was all that
father and husband ° implied.
They looked to him with un
bounded confidence and deep
affection and Fitzgerald and all
the county sympathizes with
Mrs. Howell and her children.
He leaves a wife, two sons,
Cleveland and Ed. and one daugh
ter Little Miss Lillian; three
brothers, J. E. Howell, of Ocilla:
A. T, Howell, of the Lax neigh
borhood; and Wm. Howell, of
Newport News, Va.; and two
sisters Mrs. Joe Cross, of Ports
mouth, Va.; and Mrs. J. M.
Lawrence of Gates, N. C.; to all
of whom the Enterprise bespeaks
the kindliest sympathy of the
people of the county who esteem
ed him so highly,
The news that comes from
the bedside of Sheriff D. A.
Mclnnis is not reasstring. He
has been reported some better
several times, but his general
condition is worse than it has
been at any time.
