A., B. & A. EXTENSION.
President H. M. Alkinson and
Vice President Arkwright, ofl
the Atlanta Birmingham and
Atlantic railroad, have returned
from Florida, where a few days
ago they received a charter from
secretary of state of Florida for
the erection and operation of the
Tampa Northern railroad, run
ning 50 miles of the road is prad
tically completed, and work is
being rushed on the remaieder
in the expretion of having the
entire line in operation before
January of next vear. .
Brooksville, to which woint the
new road is to run, is locoted on
a branch of the Coast Line, and
is direct line between Tampa
and Atlanta to which place the
line will probably be soon extend
ed. From Brooksville to Thom
asville, on the Atlata, Birming
ham and Atlanaic, is a short
straight route, and it is quite
probable that in a short time the
road will be extended and thus
give this city direct communica
tion with Tampa and Key West.
The proposed line would enter
Atlanta over the Atlanta, Birm
ingham and Atlantic tracks.
The officers of the new Tampa
Northern road are H. M. Atkin
son, president; M. F. Ambrose,
first vice president; P. S. Ark
wright, second vice president,
and R. C. Cullinane, secretary,
all the officers being well-known
residents of Atlanta and promi
nent officials of the Atlanta,
Birmingham and Atlantic line.
In speaking of the new road
Monday morning Mr. Arkwright
stated that the 50 miles already
under construction will probably
be but the first section of a new
trunk line. The equipment on
the new road is of the very best
and only sixty-pound rails are
being used in the construction.
The officers of the newly
chartered company are owners
of 50,000 acres of valuable timber
land, through which the road in
in process of construction will
operate. They also lown exten
sive say mill property and the
new line will advance their inter
ests in that section considerably.
All is activity on the lines of
the Atlanta, Birmingham and
Atlantic, and from appearances
it will be one of the most aggres
sive lines in the South withina
few years. The new steamship
line from Brunswick to New
York and Boston, which is to be
part of the Atkinson system, is
being pushed forward as rapidly
as possible, the work of dredging
the harbor at Brunswick having
been started last Friday., New
'steamships of the most modern
type are under construction and
‘the line will be a formidable riv
al to the line in operation.

On the way to the office yes
terday morning we had to give
the right of way to two vehicles
of vegetables vghich met on
Ocmulgee street Dbeside the
railroad track. Fohl’s wagon
loaded with early cabbage had
one head that we coaxed him to
stop in at the Clare grocery and
weigh it, and which tipped the
beam at 17 pounds. ‘The other
was a wheelbarrow carrying a
magnificent red beet which we
followed up until we found it at
Carlo’s fruit store labelied
“Weight 19 pounds.” It meas
ured four feet and two inches
from tip to tip and was raised in
Mr. Carlo’s garden on Ocmul;zee
street and with only ordiniary
care. Later on we found the
cabbage at Whitchard’s store
‘surrounded by several admirers.
;Ocilla reports one raised by the
Supt. of the oil mill which
lweizhed twenty-three pounds.
