THE DYNAMITING OF RAILROAD PROP
ERTY MUST CEASE—The dynamiting of the
‘Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic trestle Wed
nesday night is a matter of universal regret for
the deed and condemnation for the doer. For
tunately no one was hurt but someone might
have been hurt,
It is inconceivable that the men who are now
on strike should enter into a campaign of sabot
age such as their enemies would have the public
believe. Those men are confident of being rein
stated by law. They have never considered
themselves as separated from the A, B. & A.
railroad. It is their road and they feel a loyalty
for it as only men can who have worked for the
best part of their lives for an institution, have
worked and seen it grow and develope as they
worked, They do not hate the A, B, & A,
They struck simply to protect themselves against
what they believed to be an unlawful encroach
ment on their rights as workers and to defend
things they had worked and fought for vears to
secure. They are, evervone of them, confident
that they are right #nd that right will eventually
triumph. Only frightened men, desperate men,
resort to sabotage. ;
Someone who would Hke to see the \., B. &
A. railrgad-destroyed is doing the dynamiting.
Certdinly the men who expect to go back to work
Bn the A, B. & A. do not want to see it destroved.
They should exert additiomal effort to maintain
law and order in thetr cwn rznks and the ranks
of their sympathizers. The picket lines which
are maintained to prevent hot heads and scared
men from gettuing themselves and the strikers all
in trouble by rash acts of which frightened men
are capable, should be extended, if necessary, and
the railroad property protected in evervy possi
ble way against destruction or damage. It will
surely not benefit the strikers a whit for the
railroad to lose through sabotage. The road’s
loss is the former and future employes’ loss, and
they realize it.
There are many peculiar things about the dy
namiting and supposed dynamiting and trestle
burning that has been done, things that cause
one to doubt the sincerity of some of the accus
ers of the strikers. “For every crime there must
be a motive” is a fundamental idea of criminol
ogy. Find the motive and then the criminal can
be caught. To a sensible man it would seem that
the strikers and strike sympathizers can have ab
solutely no motive in damaging railroad proper
ty The leaders of the strikers realize that and
have drilled the idea into the heads of all their
men
But the sabotage must cease. It will hurt this

section more than flood or pestilence if it contin
‘ues. The railroad has able police agents, paid to
‘track down criminals. If they: are incapable of
‘doing their duty they should be replaced. The
state and county have police agents paid to pro
tect the public against such things as are now
ioccuring. The laws must be enforced and the
criminals must be brought to book, whoever they
are. :
“TEN THOUSAND FRIED CATFISH"—The
Leader reproduces the following flight of fancy
from the facile typewriter of John L. Herring of
the Tifton Gazette, not so much because we sub
scribed to what he said, but because we enjoyed
the way he said it. It demonstrates that the im
agination that made “Saturday Night” famous
has_'nt yet been deflated although its logic is bad.
Here is what John L. has to say about it:
Advance accounts of the gathering to be held
at Union City, July 4th deal in big figures. It is
stated that 10,000 catfish are being caught and put
in mammoth tanks, to be fried on that occasion.
Verily, thus do the gods, in far-seeing wisdom,
work out the eternal fitness of things, if anything
on earth or in the sea or sky can symbolize the
brass god-lets who are to be the heroes of that
Union City conglameratitn, it is the catfish. In
appearance, in habits, in disposition, mn appetite,
in spirituality and unselfishness.
(o to the catfish, thou doubter; consider hisi
qualities, and be enlightened. His unselfishness, |
his modesty, his patriotism, his cleanly habits, his{
select associations, his consideration for ()thcrs.l
Consider his physiognomy ; the modest mouth, in
dicative of delicacy of appetite and retiring (lispo-l
sition ; the mouth so expressive of the whole en
semble, ornamented by its gracefully = curling
whiskers. Consider the broad and swelling fore
head, foretelling of one who thinks noble thoughts
Consider the ways. of the catfish; how he retires
from the company of his fellow-fish into a little
world of his own; a world of clean, wholesome,
delicate, softly clinging mud, where, delicious tit
bits of sewage fondly seep into the waiting orifice
Consider that refined and discriminating appetite
‘which takes everything that comes its way. Con
sider the unselfish life, lived for its fellow-creat
iunw. Consider its socialbility; how it mingles
with Its fellows of the aquatic world. Consider
its wide, deep and soulful eyes, so expressive of
true nobility. Consider its soft, tender and deli
vate skin: so indicative of culture and refinement
Yet, even considering all these things, the cat
fish has some friends who think he would be in
the wrong company that day. Still others wonder
why he is not made the honor guest instead of the
burnt offering.
Yet is the catfish typical of the times and the
popular idols of the day. May we not soon expect
to sce the coat of arms of Georgia changed. Surely
that old, hackneyed, out-of-date motto, “Wisdom,
Justice and Moderation™ no longer has place there,
Is not the day near at hand when Georgia's coat
of-arms will be: A catfish rampant on a field saff
ron ; with pollywog ardent and gules verdant; on
a background of mud with cross lacings of yellow,
and streamers of ochre bearing the flaming herald,
“What We Sees We Takes.”
The catfish for that gatherng was a thoughtiul
selection. But he should be the hero, not the
marytr, of the hour.
