chase. We hat! merry old Christmas and its cheerful
sports ;i3ul J friend* and true, s.-’titig the brow free
from carr, making the bosoms of men to g’o.v wilt
cheerful and friendly emotions, calling friends to the
festive board undue the exchange of kind thought* and
.sentiments, and sending all away to run in juvfuioess
their course of duty until the invitations to ,| <v and
mirth ate again renewed. The p ges of the Journal
wil', therefore, be enlivened win iively chronicles of
exploits in _ the sports of the field, and with spnin tl
sketches of the fun and frolic that merry old Chostmns
lets loose upon us We will also, in order to please all,
give a weekly abstract of the most important news of
the day. And for the fair prnctisersupon the Pianor r
Guitar, shall occasi nsliy eiubedish our p.tfees with ori
ginal and selected Music.
It is a fortunate circumstance for the interest of a
work of this natuie, that the field of Literature at the
S mth is, as ve', comparatively, untrodden. The Lit
erary n s mrccs of die South, great as tliev are ac
knowledged to be, arc as yet. comparatively undevelo
ped. Every grove, river, dale and mountain, his vet
it.® tale to tell We (her f >re send our Journal forth as
a Pioneer to gather the riches of this new country. —
From every hi! 1 , dale, river and mountain, he will re
turn laden with rich stores. These srores, original and
varied in their character, as they must he, he will be
proud to display f.r the amusement and instruction ot
his readers. We ask for him a kind reception at the
hands of all friends of the cause in which he has em
barked.
Having thus detailed the plan of our future opera
tion®, we commend our hebdomeda! to (we trust,) the
favorable notice of the Southern public. Wc devote
ourselves to the work as out profession. On the verge
of manhood, and of n liberal education, we had a pro
fession to choose; after mature deliberation, wo have
chosen this, because we delightin the employment, and
are devoted to the cause fir the furtherance of which
tl:e work is established. No common obstacle, there
fore;, will turn ns aside from our course. But bavin"
chosen the Y.diting of the PIONEER, and through ii
the promotion of Southern Li erature, as the work of
our lives, we shall relinquish i' only with onr brea'lt.
And while we commend our sheet to the favor of the
public generally, we cam me rid it particularly to the
kind charities of that band who nave linked themselves
together for the advancement of the cause to which wo
devote the work. They have acted with us in rhe past;
we trust they will act with us in the tirure. No exer
tions w iil be spared to make the work such an oric as
they will look upon wi h delight.
It may be well to add that the in'ervening time be
tween this date and the davof publication will be spent
in collecting ma’crials for the work.
The PIONEER will he printed on-an imperial sheet,
in quarto form, and will contain a greater quantity of
reading inattir than any work ot the kind published in
the South.
