Congreii it worrying a'ong talking
oa the currency question, hut
netting is being done to relieve the
pleasure, while our geld is mill di
minishing. We hope to see them
wake up to the situation end give im
some re|ief legitdeiioa.
Atlanta and , Savannah are
wanting a Loxow investigating
committee for the municipal of
fices. They seem to think that
there is corruption in nil its
branches of government.
Gov. Northern will have his
train for the relief of the Nebraska
sufferer*, ready to Htart on tho
16th from Atlanta. This train
will ho loaded with everything
to eat in the way of substantials
and will be a great help to those
people.
The recent cold spell was a hard
blow to the Orange growers of Flor
ida. The young trees are all dead,
end the larger ones considerably
damaged. The fruit that is on the
tree* not ripe is n total loss. Some
of the young groves will have to be
started again. This is a severe
blow to the growers, and they w ill
feel it for years to come. The'
railroads of Florida gave the
growors half rates, so as to enable
them to get what crops they saved
on market before they spoiled.
We are in receipt of the Gasto
nia, N. C. Gazette, announcing
the marriage of Mr. J W McEl
hannon, formerly of this county,
to Miss Stella Glenn,’of Gastonia.
Mr. McElhnnnon will lie remem
bered as Walter, and was once a
member of the Monitor force. He
is now with the Washington, l). C.
Post. Miss Glenn is repovred to
tie one of Gastonia's fairest
daughters and a society lender.
The Monitor wishes for them all
the happiness possible in this life,
and a renewel of the same beyond
the skies.
Cleveland end Hill have made
up, and will now try to pull to
gether the party they have naerly
destroyed.' Hill waa invited to a
cabinet dinner and the president
specially requested that he at
tend. Hill accepted, and now the
lion and the lamb are lying down
together. Maybe this will bring
a change for the better.
The Preaa, Tom Watson's At
lanta Daily, has suspended. His
only excuse for the 'suspension is
that money is scarce and there is
no politics on hand, therefore no
need of a daily paper. It promises
to appear u£ain in the fall, when
the farmeriliegius to gather his
crops. Tommie is in it tor the
money, and when it •. scarce ''is

Railroad Talk.
There is still talk uoing on in
railroad circles about the Seaboard
Air Line building a road from
Elberton or Athens to Oarters
villo to tap the East and West
railroad there for Birmingham.
We hope the talk is true and that
it will branch off from Elberton
as it could not then help from
coining by Danielsville, ns we are
on the direct line from Elberton to
Cartersville.
If the Seaboard does decide to
build this line, we hope they will
take us into consideration and
connect n with the outside world
with iron rails. With railroad
facilities our town would take on
new life, and flourish like a hay
tree. Give us railroad connection
is all wo ask, ns we have the terri
tory to back us, and then we will
come with a whoop and show to
the world in a few years one of the
livliest little towns in Georgia.
In conclusion we say we hope the
road will ho built and that it, will
come by Danielsville.
The Bailiffs Election.
The election for Bailiff in this
district resulted in the selection
of .1 A Gordon and W M Davis
for the ensuring two years. E C
Williams, the old bailiff, who
made ‘tin elli'eient officer, was re
tired.
In Pittman district, J I* Wil
liams and W S V\ illiams were
elected by tremendous majorities
over populist opponents.
In Pocataligo district, J W Bor
oughs and W E Short easily de
feated Uioir populist opponents.
In the other districts of the
county there was no opposition
to the old officers, and they will
hold over.
In Pittman the populists, so we j
Riderstaml, put out a-candidate'
r Justice of the Peace against
! ’Squire H H Tolbert, not know
, ing that his commission was good
for two years hence. Mr. Tolbert
felt no uneasiness, and let them
|go on with their voting until the
j polls closed, when they discovered
I their mistake.
A newly married couple were on
their bridal tour in Alabama,
and just as *he groom left his
seat the train ran into a tunnel.
He hurried back to kiss his bride
while the train was going through
the tunnel, and as lie kissed the
train ran out into the light and he
foUnd that instead of kissing his
wite. lie had kissed a young widow
who was sitting just behind them.
I he widow is highly indignant and
has brought suit' for .fI.UH) dam
ages. and will not admit that it
was unintentional.
Because you miss the large
advertisements that have been
appearing in the Monitor, von
must not think that the parties
have gone *utt of business, for
they have not. They are onlv get
ting themselves together since the
rush js over, and will again come

PATENT FOR MITE A.
In the last report an inquiry relative
to a patent tormina beitiK sold over the
state was announced, in which the
farmers Were advised not to purchase
such formulas, but to apply to the de
partments instituted for the purpose of
furnishing such information on agri
culture and fertilization. The follow
ing, by the state chemist, in reply to a
similar query, corroborates what we
have previously said on the subject, and
in this connection will be found espe
cially interesting:
S. C. 11., Vistory. (la.:.
Dear Sir—Yours of Dec. 14 at hand.
The formula yon send reads as follows:
‘ ‘Formula for Home Made Guano, 1894. ”
Ammonia 5 pounds.
Phosphoric acid 2 “
Nitrate potassium 5 “
Saltpetre 10 “
Sulphur 5 “
Potash... 10 “
Liiue 50 “
Ashes 100 “
Dirt. 1,800 •*
DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING. ’
Mix all tho ingredients thoroughly,
then mix with the dirt. Moisten with
water lightly and mix thoroughly. Put
in a heap in a dry place. Three weeks
before needed pulverize thoroughly and
scatter in a guano distributor. Good
mu k is best fo • ti e holy of the guano,
but any earth ilia, is fr ;o from gravel
will answer.
The above is a very lrg'.i gra.lo fertil
izer. Lo.isoa the quantity if you wish
a lower grade. This formula will cost
less than £5.00.”
This is evidently gotten up by some
one ignorant of tho laws of chemistry,
and not familiar with the materials
named in the formula. To exp an this
a short description may bo necessary.
Ammonia is a ga& and if put into a
fertilizer without sin acid to fix it, only
a small portion of it will remain. If
sulphate of ammonia is intended, the
lime will take up the sulphuric anhyd
ride of the sulphate and drive out the
ammonia. Pure phosphoric aeid is too
expensive sin article to use in a fertili
zer. This is probably intended Jor aeid
phosphate of lime, or “acid phosphate”
as it is usually called.
Nitrate of potassium and salt petre
are tho same thing. Sulphur is not a
plant food. It may be added as nil in
secticide. Potash, like phosphoric acid,
is too expensive siuii also too caustic to
use in an uueombiued form. Ksiiuit or
muriate of potash vqs probably intend
ed. If in every ton the constructor of
the formula wished to secure: 5 pounds
ammonia, you could use 20 pounds sul
phate of auuuouin; 2 rounds pho -phoric
aeal, you could use 29 pounds phosphate
( acid; 15 pounds nitrate of potassium,
j you eon'd use 15 pounds nitrate of po
i tnssinm; in pounds potash, you could
1 use NO non ids kaiuit; 50 pounds lime.
yen could use too pounds carbonate of
lime; 100 pou dels minis, you could u
100 pounds ashes; dirr q. s. to make .
ton. y u could u-o !.('. p.ntuds dirt
(enough to make a tout
The formula is cheap “imply because
it is so weak. Put up its suggested. s,
that yon will not lose the virtues of pa? -
of it, the formula will only give you
goods with:
Ammonia, 1 of 1p - rent.
Phosphoric acid. 1-8 of i per cout.
Potash, 2 per cent.
Lima, 2 1-2 per cent.
It is incorrectly cube 1 n guano and.
high grade fernl-zer by the M-I>r u f the
formula. It is simply a compost.
The suggestion to us-' good muck in
place of the ;rr is n-- - 1 oa°. If you
will write what material you have ac

To purchase such form nip. a.; the one
you solid is waste of money. The de
partment of agritalturo is always glad
to furnish foriaulas.froo-oc cost for any
intelligent iinr of fertilization. There
are a numb rof miunouiafe; which can
be nsnii, and i r s-deetiou depends
both upon i!i • eu o of securing them
and the crop for which they are in
tended Tin’ following are the most
frequently used: Cottonseed meal,
blood, tankage, sulphate of ammonia,
nitrate of soda and flshscrap. Phos
phoric acid is usually furnished by acid
phosphate, and potash by kainit or mu
riate of potash.
The compost heap becomes more and
more valuably aiftl profitable as acces
sible fertilizing material is best taken
advantage of. This will vary upon
each farm according to the conditions
surrounding it, and convenient local
material which can be rendered avail
able as plant food.
It. is well to remember that a chea-i
fertilizer may prove to be a very profit
able experiment or a very unprofitable
one, tit ivnding 1 upon whether
you have obtained a lot o actual plant
food cheaply or woe;ner you have se
cured a material which a :ms low priced
■ when its weight is considered, but. is
yet very hign priced w.ieii its small con
tent of plant lood is ustim ited.
