Mrs. Jessie Scarborough, of Comer, is vititing her parents here this week. Miss Nellie Turner, of Gaines ville, Ga., is visiting her mother, Mrs. Cynthia Bird, this week. • Since Mr. .Lute Johnson has left ns, some of the -fair sex are qnite despondent. Come back Lutie. , In moving lost Saturday. Mr. B J Meadow had the misfortune to loose his silverware. We have not learned whether he recovered it or not. C W Morris, of near Five Forks, Avas visiting W W Gholeton last Tuesday. Mr. Morris is a good friend to the Monitor, and always ramembers us. Wm.. Griffith, col., who is hound to Hon. D W Meadow, walk ed off last Monday, without notice to anyone. Mr. Meadow is very anxious to catch him and has of fered a reward ol' $15.00 for Ids capture. The recent rains have made the roads almost impassable. E C Williams went to •Harmony- Grove this week to bring back John Butler, who recently jumped his contract with Mr. JT Turner, and was arrested by Marshall Hawkes of Harmony Grove. Married on last Thursday, at the home of the brides father, Mr. J B Simmons,* Mr. Logan Coile to Mias Mattie Simmons, T A Grimes, Esq., officiating. The Monitor fishes'them a happy voyage. J W Boroughs of Poca, was in town to-day. The election for commissioners: "for tlie town was not held on last Saturday. The present com missioners will order an election soon. \ Gov. Atkinson refused to pardon Harry Hill, who was sent to the gang for forgei’y. Since he sees that lie will serve his time, the gay- and festive Harry lias become! irritated and has had a fight with | one of his fellow t convicts, in! which he was stabbed. * Prof. J. I. Ray, one of the host teachers in the county, is in. charge, of the- school at Lilborn. He opened Monday 7th. inst. The people of that community would do well to patronize him. C. J. Landers, a young, but one of the best prepared ' teachers, in this county, is in charge of the Five Forks school. Charley has a bright future before him. J. S. McCurdy, W. R. Porter field and B J Meadow, of Comer, were unio see us yesterday, Miss Willie A. Guinn, of Wilkes county,* will be' the assis tant in our school for the present year. She will be hejre to take charge of her department on Mon day. Miss Quinn comes highly reccommended. Everybody seems to be getting down to work for the new year. Mrs. James Mart'll and Mrs. J P M ©on, have been on the sick list for several days, but we are glad to say are very much improved at this writ ing amt av dope- to soon see them entirely recovered. We were very muck shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. Joseph Stevens on the night of Blst. nit. It was truly a sad new year to her many friends and her family, but we are confident it was an awakening in a bright and glorious new year to her, ter her life was that of a clmei fill, faithful Christian. Masters Roy and Olivo Cheney visited the pleasant and hospitable family of Mr. J D Wynn last Sun day. Miss Jessie Arnold visited her sister Mrs Dixon last Saturday. With the elec tion of such efficient officers and the hearty cooperation of the com munity, we are hopeful of a pleasant, profitable year in this great work in our midst.
