THE MONITOR, PrnusHF.n Every Thi t fsday. Moseley & McGowan. Eds, and Props. The president of France has re signed his otiice, claiming as the cause that he did not have the sup port of the government in his ac tions. The news of his resigna tion spread like wild fire, and al most caused paralysis throughout France. Jabez, Wiggin*, who created aiieh Bn excitement in Augusta on Sunday before Christinas, by killing two po liceman, weun ling another and killing a bystander, has been tried, found gnilly and seatencced to be hanged. Law and order prevailed in this instance, and aoou justice will bo tnoctod oat to the wrong doer. Gorman and Hill have locked boras in tho Senate, and it seems to be a fight to tho finish. Bill is Sto uproot Gorman Jsadsr greuate* and the limes are on old time cnstores and new fangled ideas. Gorman is for the former and Hill for the Utter. It remains to be seen who will tv ip. Govotnor Atkinson has appoint ed Miss Ellen J. Dortch, of Ptnklin county, as Assistant Snfe Librarian. The public and the press commend this CwHintment as Miss Dortch is a wwrtby young lady, a strong wrjtf&r,h<l a strong advocate of democracy, ami has done much for that pArty in the past. •v-- it 1 — 1• — 1 Itf Haralsonville, an aged couple, the husband being 07 and tho wife 60, who had been living together since 1850 were divorced. There were 10 children, the issue of the marriage, and all were in oourt to testify for the mother. The judge remarked that from a legal standpoint; desertion and nonttip port being alledged, ho would bo compelled to grant the divorce, but in handing down the decree he scoied tho old couple, and they were compotled to sit and listen. Hon. Thomas G Lawson our able representative in Congress, has introduced a bill to establish a division of the U. S. district court at Athens. The promises are good for the bill to become a law', as Speaker Crisp will give it the right-of-way through the house aad Senator Walsh will engineer it through the Senate. It is not long until Congress will adjourn, but is hoped that this hill will become a law, as it will be a greit convenience to the citizens of this part of the State. This is the year for economy. Economize all s]ong the line. Live on as Jittlo as possible, and you will not have so much to pay when the cotton crop is made. People can live on a great deal less than they think, when it is neccessary, and it has about couie to the point where it is neccessary to do eo. Make every edge cut that you can, for there is mote in saving than in making. Economy is the watchword, and if you will act on this line you will profit greatly by it. The government now requires those who have private b6xes at the postoffire here to pay 100. per quarter rent. Several years ago our citizens bought a. case of 60 boxes and put them up at the of fice, purtly for their own conveni ence . Now the govern men t comes under a recent law and confiscates this property, and says that the parties who own these boxes, if they uee them, must first pay 15c per quarter. This lias caused a good deal of vigorous kicking on the part of the patrons of the office, and they now take their mail from the general delivery'and the boxes are marked “vacant.” Mr. H. H. Cabaniss. Manager of tke Atlanta Journal has hit open a novel idea for helping 'he Colton States and Internati nal Exposition. He invited the Woman's Depart ment of the Exposition to get oat the paper for on# day and the offer was accepted. Mrs. Joseph Thomp son. Piesident of tho Woman's Board of Manager*. will be Kditor m-Chief and other ladiss will oou duct tho different departments. St. Valentiuo’s day has been select ed and the ladieswill edit it and take proceeds for the Womaus Depart ment of the Exposition Women rofKMtera will Jo tho coarts, rail roads, sstion-house, Recorder’s coart, capital and everything else. All the regular force ..will be dis charged for that day aui the ladlee of the Expositioa Board will take the whole responsibility Tho liet includes some of the brightest la dies in Atlanta aad the Valentino Journal le x|matad to be the raciest issue that has eyvv beeu pruned. COTTON GROWERS CONVEX-. VENTION. The Cotton Growers Convention j which assembled at Jackson,Miss., on the 9th inst. hsts adjourned. They perfected the organization by giving it the name of the Na tional Protective Cotton Growers Association, elected officers, pass ed by-laws, etc. If is provided that every State have an organi zation, and that the presidents of the State organization appoint the presidents for county associa tions. Resolutions were passed, call ing on the cotton planters all over the country to reduce the acreage soas to reduce the surplus. Hon. W A Broughten of Madi son, Morgan county, is the pres ident for this State, and he hopes to get the farmers interested in the movement, so that the acreage for Georgia will be greatly de creased, and that the acreage in home supplies increased in pro portion. If we can get to where we can make our supplies at home ami pursuit ton a surplus crop. wlfroe gettjflp the shoe on the right foot 'and prosperity will then begin to dawn on us. Semi us #1.25 and get the Mon itor and Constitution for one year. We mean by this the full $1.25 to us. If you send by register you pay the register fee. To-day about 12 O'clock I)r Sor rells of this place and Dr Ranks of Jeptha had a fight. It seems that Dr. Banks had wrtten Dr. Sorrells a not# in regard to some matters, which Dr. Sorrells took ns an in sult., and wrote Ranks another. When Ranks got the noto from Sorrells, became to see Dr. Sor rells, and called him out of his office, to talk the matter over, In the course of the conversation 'Banks gave Sorrells the d— lie, immediately after which Sorrells knocked him out of the buggy with a rock. R L Brooks who was with I>r. Banks, held DT.Sor rells, while other friends infer ed. Brooks and Dr. Banks left for home at-once. Gold is Still beiug taken from the Ri dgeway und Carrington mines in the lower part of 'this county. If these mines were only developed, gold could be found in paying qiinntitea. The hills of old Mndisoh hold all kind of ores and if capital in sufficient quantities could be had to develop it, there is no telling how rich she is. The gold taken from these mines is of the finest quality, and the parties who own them have a bonanza. NOTICE OF mS'OUTION.
