Barney is a good farmer, and makes his farm self-sustaining and his cotton crop is a surplus. Hard times is nothing to him. If rW C Berryman of Harrison district was in town today. Mr Ber ryman is one of Madieon‘s enter prising men, who lives at home and boards at the same place. Last Monday the hardest rain fell here known in years. It came down so hard that it washed Uncle Robin Williams hat off, as he was going home, and he never missed it until hegot in the house. Davison & Lowe have an ad. in this issue showing their great reduction price clearance sale. They are the leaders in fashion able dress goods, and we advise you to call on them when you visit Ath ens, to buy your dry goods, etc. E T Gunnells of nearNeese, one of the county’s best farmers, was in town to.day and paid our sanctum a visit. W A and E E Stone, killed a hog the other day which netted them 4021bs ©f good, all around, solid meat. Mr. Stoua failed to inform ns what the hog weighed gross, but we suppose it wag in the neighborhood of 500. Jt is useless to figure out the profit on this hog, as everybody knows that it is woith more on the mar et than the heaviest bale of cotton in the county. It is all s' lately impossible to lose money farming as the Messrs Stone farm. Madison Springs- The sick of our community are improving. Bud Crow was in Athens last week. Charles Dean visited relatives and friends in Hart couuty last Sunday. Madison Springs has a good string band now. H and W, F. DORSEY, Carlton Column, A batch of Interesting News from our Rail road City. Mr.and Mrs.A W Mathews, were visiting friends in Elberton last week. If any of the young ladies would like an industrious, inteligent beau, they would do well to set their caps for either Arthur Long, or Willie Watson. Mr. Chandler Stevens accompa nied by his sister Mias Cynie, and Miss Bessie Green, of Wiikes coun ty, attended preaching here last Sabbath. Misses Mattie and Lizzie Eber hardt, visited the family of Dr Pope Deadwyler of Elberton last iveek. Our Literary club has froze this winter. We hope soon to see it thawed and once more able to nav igate, as it is very profitable and pleasant for our people. I wonder if a certain young man of Comer does not think there is something more dangerous than ghosts near Carlton,as he was heard one night to call for help as he was on his way to see his best girl. We are still having our share of the cold, rainy weather, which makes it very unpleasant for all i kinds of work. At this writing Dr. 0. L. Dead wyler is very sick, but we hope to see him entirely recovered soon. Also Mr. L. P. Goolsby, and Mrs. Ed Arnold, are on the sick list, but we are glad to know that they are rapidly improving. Our town had an election for Mayor last week which resulted in the election of Mr. M.F Arnold. Ihe town could not have made a better selection as Mr Arnold will be sure to contend for the right and will be just in all' "j dealings with the people and wli .t All in his power for the upbifk ' • (of town. I ' V Mr.A. P.Stevens is looking very pleasant now and was at his desk at Sabbath school last Sabbath as eecretary ,butdid not give the school a lecture, as some expected. Ask Messrs Jack Edwards and Presh Mattox, if it would not be more pleasant to have a gentle horse, especially when they visit their best girls at night. Mr. Thompson, our new operator here appears to he attentive to bus iness, aad a qiet intelligent affable young man, much to the gratifi cation of o >r’ peopl, for it is very unpleasant to b- compelled to have a wicked man in a position where our boys are forced to deal with, even in a business capacity. I would sometimes tell the Mon itor what our merchants are doing hut I suppose they dout care very much about the public knowing what they have, as they have no advertisements in their county paper.
