THE MONITOR, Published Bvkbv Thursday. Moseley & McGowan, Eds. aid Props. ii-M 11 ■ J-g-V”' .1 I (Question l.—How much phosphoric scid, potash and nitrogen does an aver age acre of corn take up, and what is the best fertilizer for corn? Answer 1. — Phosphoric acid, about 7 ’ pounds; potash, about 7 pounds; and nitrogen alsmt 7 pounds. This would Indicate a fertilizer with a large pro portionate percentage of nitrogen. But it has been found that it does not pay on land of average fertility to buy a fertilizer with a large per cent of nitro gen for corn. Wnether the plant as similates the nitrogen directly from the atmosphere or throngh the roots, after the manner of clover, we do not know. The fact still remains that, al though it requires a large amount of • nitrogen, highly nitrogenous fertilizers do not pay. The following is a good formula by per cents: Nitrogen, 2 per oentr potash, 7 per cent; phosphorio acid, 0 per cent. AMMONIA ACTUAL AND POTENTIAL. Question 2-1 see in the law regulat ing the sale of fertilizers that each sack must have branded upbn it the amount of ammonia actual and potential. What I wishto know is what is actual and what potential. H A T.,Nashville. Answkb 2 Ammonia is composed of three parts of hydrogen and 14 parts of nitrogen. When the composition is already effected ir, is actual ammonia. Ou the other hand, if the nitrogen alone is present it is calculated to a ba sis of ammonia. 14 pounds of nitrogen being equivalent to 17 of ammonia. For example, dried bloo.l does not con tain any actual ammonia, but if it con tained 14 pounds of nitrogen it would be said to contain 7 pounds of poten tial ammonia from the fact that by fer mentation it is capable of yielding that amount.
