Isaac Strick land had five swarms from one gum and four of them ran away. A lady hearing some disturbance among her chickens a few nights ago went out with a lamp to in vestigate, when she she found a very large chicken snake helping [ himself to the small fry. The snake becoming alarmed at the light broke for a hole and started in, but the ladv was too quick for it and caught it the tail but could not pull it out. She found she was losing her grip, when she let go'to spit on her hand for a better Syasp, when the snake came very near getting away. She caught it again and called for an axe with which she cutoff about a foot of its tail. This reminds me of another snake story which took place sev eral years ago. The man who told it, had no mouth (?) for lying either. He said he was out one August day hunting for some stray hogs when he came across a large snake in tho wood?, and while looking for something to kill it with saw another. lie concluded to cut a good pole and thrash out the woods. So he took out his knife and while opening it he dis covered another and on looking arouud found that he was sur rounded by snakes. He said he never could tsllj what became of his knife, as lie just shut his eyes and rau a Nancy llanks gait for at least a quarter of a mile right through the worst kind of black jack thicket.
