People Who Are III*
Cases are unfortunately only too
frequont where serious illness has
been mistaken for intoxication, and
where the sufforer lias bocn taken
to the station bonse instead o l to
the hospital—a mistake that lias re
sulted more than once in loss of life.
In fact, there aro cases whoro nil
the skill of n trained physician is
required to tell whether n man is or
is not nndor the inflneneo of liquor.
In an artielobouringtbonbovobead
ing The Hospital discusses this sub
ject as follows:
’*Roughly, we may say that the
commonly accepted signs by which
tho man in the street recognizes the
effocts of aloohol aro unsteady gait,
Incoherent speech, extravagant bo
harior and drowsy helplessness
Doubtless any one of theao coining
on suddenly in ono who, up. to the
moment, had boon as othor men,
would excite suspicion of disease.
Bnk tbe spectators do not see the lie
ginning of the case. Till a man is
helpless or obstreperous but little
notice is taken of his vagaries, and
in 90 cases out of WO tbo decision
most be arrived af
condition visible to tbe eye, and a
diagnosis is not always easy on suoh
imperfect evidence.
“The first and most ohvions signs
of drunkenness are those dependent
oh unsteadiness of gait. From Hie
street boy’s point of view, these are
always productive of hilarity, and
even tho bettor instructed aro apt
to look on inability to walk straight
HU conclusive, and yot bow many
maladies produce the same condi
tion. Many a man in the early
singes of locomotor ataxy has lost his
Character from hjs tendency to stag
ger in tho dark. Then those oondit
tions which'go by tho name of M
nioro’s disease may closely imitate
the offectsof drink. To tire sufferer,
whon tho paroxysm oomoa on, the
sensation is of violent noises in the
car, accompanied by a feeling of be.
ing whirled through space, or as if
the road, tho housos and everything
in sight were flying in largo circles
round aliont him, and no wonder
that ho seizes the nonrest lamppost
or sinks down sick and helpless on
tho pavenjont, clutching for security
anything within his roach. To tbe
bystander, however, ho is a pioturo
of tbe roost abject drunkenness.”
Tho writer hero reminds ns that
not only organio diseases, but sim
ple indigestion or headache may
produoe effects that simulate drunk
enness. Ho goes on: •
“Peoplo sometlmos also unknow
ingly take drugs which have the
same effect. In both tbeao cases
Bpeeoh also may bu affected, and ear
plauation may be difficult. Disorder
of speech, however, Is usually con
nected with more serious diseaso,
and a roan with a email hemorrhage
on his brain moy stagger in speech
as well ns with bis logs, nnd may be
‘run in’ as drunk when his very life
depends on proper treatment.
“The same may happen after in
jury of tho skull. A man, full of
drink, may in u street row receive a
blow which causes fraoture of the
skull, but ho may not drop. lie may
walk away far from any evidenoe of
riot, and then sit down, and, becom
ing comatose, naay bo taken to the
Htation ns bolug dead drunk. And
horo, if there be no obvious wound,
everything 1b against him. The
smell of bis broath condemns him
to the police 001 l instead of the hos
pital ward, and only at the post
mortem its it found that his skull is
broken, and that, tho pressure on bis
brain might have been relieved.
Snob cases as thia occur almost ev
ery month. But, in fact, in tho diag
nosis of drunkenness tho possibili
ties of error are endless. Poison,
uremia, jiost epileptio states, the ex
cited stages of general paralysis,
sudden outbreaks of mania, the oc
currence of dinbetio coma, tho on
set of acute febrilo diseases and
even mere exhaustion and fatigue
way all produce symptoms simulat
ing the effects of drink.' We oannot,
then, too strongly emphasize the ne
cessity of medical examination
whenever there oan be the slightest
doubt whether a man is drunk or
sober, nor oan wo too strongly urge
any medical man who is called to
such a ease to bo wary in his deal
ings with it, to distrust first impres
sions, to enter into all the symp
toms, however plain the case may
seem, and to remember the endless
pitfalls in the way of hasty diagno
sis.”—Literary Digest

The Shirkers hare made a great
hit. Their digestive Cordial is
is said to be meet suocesfful reme
dy for stomach troubles ejrer in
troduced. It immediately relieves
all puiu and distress after eating,
builds up the feehl# system and
■sake* the weak strong.
The fact ij, food# properly di
gested are better than so-called
tonics. The cordial not only con
tains food already digested* but is
a digester of other foods. Eood
that is not digested does more
harm tqan good. People who us#
tho cordial insure tbe digosti'D
of what food they eat and In this
way get the benefit of it and grow
strong.
