The United States Senate has
passed a Free Silver substitute to
the House bond bill, by a vote of
42 to 38. Twenty of the demo
cratic Senators voting for it, while
18 voted against it. Senator Ba
con voted for the bill, and Gordon,
Georgia’s ether S'nator, was pair
ed against it. It thought that the
House, which is so overwhelming
ly republican, will defeat the biff.
Dr, N G Long of Klberton, as
will be nolleed elsewhere, is spoken
of as a probable candidate for Con

reputation in the last legislature
as a Senator from this senatorial

An interesting political rumor
comes from the upper end of the
eighth congreisional distriot, and
it puts Dr. N G Long, who was a
member of the last samite, in the
ranks of strong congressional pos
sibilities, Dr. Long was one of
flie most prominent mem hers of
the senate, and although it was his
entry into state politics, ke certain
ly seemed to the manner born.
The doctor is regarded as one of
the strongest men in the eighth
district.' That he is specially
strong with the people i demon
strated By his race far the senate
two years ago. His friends point
out that on tho financial question
he strongly defended the cause of
of the people and the use of silver,
when Judge Lawson saw fit to
repudiate his pledge made to the
people before the election. ” That
the judge will be a candidate for
re-election is said to be certain, ami
while a number of other prominent
men in the eighth have been talk
ed of, Thera soenis at present to be
a dearth of actual candidates. A
prominent Clarke county man who
was here yesterday said: 'Dj,
Long would be a very strong candi-.
date, and I am inclined to believe
that tie friends are going to put
kirn in the rate. He was an abls
member of tbs senate, and is very
ablo, and would make an able reps
resentative. The fact that he is a
strong silver man is certainly in his
favor in the Bth district.—Atlanta
Constitution.
Col. t -D W Meadow will be the

themselves for defeat.—Carnesville
