SYMPTOMS OF ANTCRA” IX COWS.
The acute form without external

Charbou tumors are sometimes observed 1
as primary accidents—-at other times
during the couso of acuto or subacuto
Anthrax. They may ftppear upon the
head, neck, chest, shoulders, abdomen,
•heath, milk glands, .flanks and limbs.
HOW anthhax is communicated.
In order to answer yonr third question
as to how the disease is communicated,
we must explain something of its nature
aud peculiar attributes. In tho bulletin
referred to it is defined us “a specific
power affection; animals and communi
cable to man. and which is dependent
upon tho introduction into tho system
of a specific micro-organism, tho bacillus
anthrucia.” We are also told that there
are three recognizml wavs by which the
pena may penetrate into tho animal
body, viz: 1-t. the alimentary canal:
2 ifi tbesKin; -!rd. tlrj lung*; but it is
exceptional for tiio diteaso to be trails
mined from a diseased u it healthy ani
mal.
This bacillus anthracis cannot live
without oxygen. which dtirinjr t.ieani
uiiil's life is supplied through tho lungs
with every breatli that is dr..wit.
After death, if tho iit'tvfej animal is
at Once linrneil. and liim.t of the excre
tions lroni the n: rural or other openings
be allowed to escape, all possibility of
infection fr >m that ant mil at least is
destroyed. Bnt if the carcass is muti
lated, or left exposed to the ravages of
carnivorous or other animals, or if the
body fluids or excremeutitiou* matter
containing the baccilli l>e exposed to the
air or allowed to escape, these organisms
coming in contact with the oxygen of
the air will form spores which are pre
served on the surface of vegitatioli or of
the soil itself for nti almost indefinite
time. Animals grazing over these con
taminated spots become infected,, and
grain or forage drops raised on- sncli
places being infedted with sporos of

conveying the disease, not by actual
Contact, but by their droppings and
other means mentioned. Besides tho
three mentioned other tire liable
to the disease, sheep, goats, deer, cam
els, cuts, rabbits, mice, dogs, foxes und
fowls.
The drinking water of pastures, or
even wells, if the surface water is al
lowed to flow into them, may also be
come containitiated. The disease germs
are washed by rains into ditches, pond?,
pools, creeks, etc,, itna niti.v b < trans
ported great distances, eiiining sudden
and uuiiccouutable outbreaks of this dis
ease. ! After tho diseoso once gains n
foothold tnera can bo no doubt that flio.-

it. Hence the importance of using tltt
fish oil eiuti.sioi. After surging the
blood of an infectc i am mil, if tliev

of Anthrax as given in this Yulu..b.o bul
letin are, first
INTESTINAL ANT HltM.
Wliea the disease is taken into th
system through the alimentary canal
it is termed Intestinal Anthrax, aud is
usually produced by spores which are
swallowed with the food and drink.
Second,
EXTERNAL OR CARIJUNCULAB ANTHRAX.,
This condition is usually found wltero
animals having wo undo, uuuo in con
tact with tho bacteria when lying in in-,
•footed pastures, or are bitton by blood-,
sucking insects, which have been feed
ing on infecred living or dead animals
Even after death, a diseased animal con
tains bnccidi. and then, if they are not
■ destroyed, will by coil tact with the air
form spores which do wot decompose,
bur, remain intact, after tl)o carcass de
composes, and thus mutiplv indefinitely
the causes of disease. For the same
reason t:cilli deposited oil the soil ill
the droppings of diseised animals, bo
come prolific sources for tho gproad of
the discuss*. The third form is produced
by inhalation or through the lungs; in
this tho spores eotne in contact with the
mucous membtane of tho air tubes of
the lungs. We have replied to yorjv
question at length, in order to call at
tention to tho careless methods which
liuve heretofore beau in common practice
in regard to disposing of the bodies of
diseased animals. Tho usual plan has
boon to dump them at any convenient
place' in the woods, and loavo them
to deposit, their denthdcnling germs.
Sometimes -iiidi animals are skinned
and their hides sold, again multiplying
the chances of infection.
BDRNIVO THE CABO tS3r.fi
is the only effective method of disposing
of them in order to prevent infection.
Piisiour discovered that even where
such bodies were buried, tho r,pores, or
genus of the disease, found their way
to the surface through the agency of
our common earth worms. After reach
ing tho outer air these germs may be
disseminated through various mediums,
winds, waters, plants, etc.
TO BURN ANTHRAX BODTH".
effectually, the most convenient method,
as advised by the Louisiana Experiment
Station, where they have hod consid
erable experience with the disease aud
its dire consequences, is to dig a trench
similar to a barbecue tronch. 11l the
bottom place tho dry wood and kind
ling. on which a little kerosetie may be
p Hired. Across the top of the pit lay a
sufficient number of green poles, on
which place the carcass. Dry wood and
kindling inay be piled above uud around,
aud when the fire is lighted the Work
is finished expeditiously and thoroughly.
Great euro should be exercised iu hand
ling the carcass to prevent tiie escape of
blood, fluid or excrement, and all ar
ticles corning in direct contact with
the carcass should also be br.ruod. We
havo written at length on this
DREAD DISEASE, ANTHRAX,
because of the recent outbreak of
isiatia, and bp-canse of several sporadic
cases, which have come to our knowl
edge. Scientists, .iu different parts of
the country, are urging the importance
of taking care,in these details lest we
have introduced among ns an
which lias heretofore carried off thou
