Prof. B. E. Payne, of Fort La
mar, spent a day or two with us
during Christmas, on his way to
take up his school near Jeptha.
Prof. Payne is one of our bright
est pedagogues, and we are proud
to know that he lias a flourishing
school.

11. Hardman, who was raised in
this county, but is now one of the
best engineers on the Southern rail
road, gave us a most pleasant call
last week. He and his wife were
visiting relatives here during the
holidays.
The extreme cold weather this
week has retarded us somewhat in
getting out this issue. The ink,
type and everything else was fro
zen. Out of all these difficulties,
though, here we are, and we hope
to meet you 51 more times the pre
sent year.

Traveling Salesman,
Our clever friend, J. O. Daniel,
presented us with a piece of water
melon Thursday of last week that
lie had saved from his raising of
last year. The melon was sound

Daniel had more he had saved that
he expected to cut before long.
Dr. W. 1). Gliolston has return
ed to Augusta to resume his stu
dies at the Medical college there,
where he will graduate next spring.
He does not know whore he will
locate, and it, may be that he will
decide tocome here. We will glad
ly welcome him to our town as a
permanent, citizen.
Miss Clyde Gordon, who taught
the school at, I’noli last year, has
again opened school there. Miss
Clyde has just finished a term at
the State Normal School, and is
now better prepared to teach than
before. She gave perfect satisfac
tion last year, and we hope for her.

W. R. Hodge, wife and son John,
of Prairie Dell, Texas, arc spend
ing some time with relatives here.
Mr, Hodge left here some 18 years
ago and this is his second visit,, ho
having been here about ten years
ago. He is doing well in his adopt
ed State and it gives us pleasure
to know it. We lmpo his visits
will he more frequent in future.

W. A. Boggus was arrested here
last week, on the charge of mur
dering F. M. Holliday, in Jackson
county, some time ago. Ben Col
lier, B. 11. Ely and Van Martin
made the arrest. Boggus was car
ried to Jefferson and after a trial
was commit ted to jaii to answer
the charge. A pistol that belong
ed to the dead mail seemed to fig
ure in t he trial a good deal, it hav
ing passed through the hands of
Boggus and he not being able to
give a satisfactory account of it.

Christmas lias come and gone,
and it was the most orderly Christ
mas we have ever seen in Daniels
villo. No arrests were made, no
rows had and the least drinking,
there being but one or two men
who seemed to be the least intox
icated. We were glad to see this,
as it speaks volumes for our peo
ple, and we are glad to know t hat
these occasions can pass off this
way. The young people of the
town had their social gatherings
at the different homes and tlie time
was pleasantly spent . We hope to
see many more come and go the
same as this,

will be one of peace, pleasure and

F. M. Strickland, alias J. H. Lee,
was jailed here last week, charged
with burglary. It seems that he
had some keys by which he would
enter the stores at Coiner and take
goods therefrom. Some shoes and
other articles were missed from t lie
store of Rowe & Moon and Strick
land suspected. He went away
and was followed by Allison Rowe
and captured at. Carnesville and
brought back. He waived a pre
liminary hearing and was commit
ted to jail in default of SFM bond.
He recently married a Miss Black,
near Comer, stealing her away from
her people, under the name of J.
H. Lee, and did not own that bis
name was Strickland until placed
in jail.
It lias been demonstrated repeat
edly in every State in the Union
and in many foreign countries that

Our school opened Monday with
15 pupils in attendance the first
day. The weather was so very dis
agreeable that, it was impossible
for the children to go. There li is
been some increase during the week
and Monday morning several new
students will come in and swell the
roll. Prof. J. H. II ill is at the
head of the school and is an able,
conscientious and cultured teacher.
He is assisted by Miss Estelle
Hood, of Harmony Grove, who is
a graduate of the Gainesville Fe
male Seminary, and comes well
indorsed as a highly educated and
cultured young lady. She lias had
experience in teaching, and will)
these two able teachers our school
is destined to he the largest and
most prosperous in many years.
Our columns are open to them, or
any of the other teachers in the
county, for anything that, is ben
eficial to education.
The Christmas tree at the aead-:
emy was a grand success. Two j
trees were placed on the stage —’
one on each end —with a chimney

on the trees, and when lighted up
with the little wax candles all pre
sented a beautiful appearance. The
choir rendered some n ice select ions
and Rev. Frank Quiliian gave a

a) Santa Claus was the hit of the
evening and brought forth much
applause. There was a large crowd
in attendance, and it took nior
th in an hour to deliver the pre
sents, with three persons to take

Everything passed off nicely, and
it was voted b}" those present that
these were the prettiest, tiees that
bad ever been seen here. Nearly
