Ccntimrcd Southern Farm Prosperity
Dependent on Cutting Produc

Peaking and Saving
Atlanta, Ca. —(Special.)—“Tens cf
Thousands of farmers in the South
v/Hl face the problem cf making cot
ton under heavy weevil infestation
for the first time in 1320. Their suc
cess or failure under these new con
ditions will be absolutely dependent
on the degree that there is food, grain
and forage produced oil their farms
this year,” said IT. G. Hastings, presi
dent of hath the Georgia Chamber of
Commerce and the Southeastern Fair.
“A few wee IT ago the newspapers
carried the report that an Alabama
cctraly was preparing to erect
monument to the boll weevil, because
of the good the weevil had done them
in forcing them cut of the 'all-cotton’
poverty producing rat, into the pros
perity that always follows a diversity
cf crcps and the production on home
acres of every pound possible of food,
grain and forage supplies needed by
the family and live stock.
“Onr good people here in the South
have never, until very rceefctly, taken
the home or family vegetable garden
seriously an a scarce of food supply.
It has been locked on strictly as a
side issue, something cf little impor
tance. something to he attended to the
last thing on the place. The home
garden, rightly handled, can be made
to produce half the food needed by
the family anl practically without
money ecst.
"The average Tick nr.d promise’ sort
of a garden has little value. To be
of real value the garden must be plan
ned for, really prepared for, planted
right and kept cultivated through the
season, and cultivated whenever need
ed. That hind of a garden will keep
its owner’s table well supplied with
an abundance of healthful food seven
or eight months in the year, as well
as furnishing an abundance cf canned
and dried vegetables for winter use.
“Every mess of vegetables direct
from garden to’table, every can or jar
