Sunday and MoMnday we had
nme very disagreeable weather for
this section. Sunday night and
'•londay there was the heaviest froz
en rain and sleet that we have had
; ere in a number of yyears. Tele
phone wires and poles were literally
destroyed—being torn down and
broken to pieces. A good many
shade and fruit trees were also torn
down by the weight of ice or badly
injured by the limbs being torn off.
We have htard of no casualties by
:he storm, but it was certainly quite
destructive to timber and fences.

We learn that the Presbyterian
church has extended a call to Rev,
Langford to become pastor of that
church at least until the meeting at
Athens Presbytery in September. It
s thought he will accept.

We would like to aslc our respect
ed “city dads” to take a tramp up
the street from the Court House to
Mr. Frank White’s corner after such
a rain as we have had this week. We
are satisfied that if they will do this,
they will at once order some work
-do/ie on that walk. School children
and many other people have to clam
ber through these several times a
day and it is just simply almost im
passable.

IN FORMER DAYS
Through the kindness of Mr. W
D. Meadow, Clerk Super;- Court
we have been furnished a c"y o
the Monitor published October ;
100 ’, from which we gather the fol
lowing items:
E. J. Christy was at that time ed
itor and proprietor of the paper.
Most of the heading matter v.a
or. the hot presidential campaign of
that year between Jas. G. Blaine
Republican, and Grover *' itvobind
Democrat, t is needless to v a t<
teat the Monitor, was or:-an:-on:
i’or Cleveland, wh.o triumphant!',
elected.
In that "issue was a notice of a
change of time in the monthlj
meeting of the teachers of the coun
ty from T. J. Adams, C. ifi. 0. "
J. G. Cart hedge, Sr., Vi . 11. Power
and E. W. Crow, calling-a meeting
ol the county singing convention at
Union church, on Friday' b . tore the
Ith Sunday in October Jtys.j.
A special to the Monitor from F:
S. Smith, of Jefferson, announced
the destruction by fire di the Mar
tin Institute building or. the night
of September 30.
t seems that our people then, as
now didn't patronize the advertising
columns of the paper to much ex
tent, D. W. Meadow, J. J. Strick
land and C. B. Henry hSd law cards
in that, issue and G. T. Johnson, A.
A. Johnson, ordon and . Turner and
J. A. Huff had local notices of their
business.
The merchants and business men
of Athens patronized the Monitor
mite liberally at that time. George
W. Calvin, grocer; announces the
following prices at his store, which
s quite refreshing to read now: 11
pounds granulated sugar for $1; 13
pounds white extra <3* sugar for $1;
14 pounds extra C. sugar for $1; 7
ponds fancy coffee for J; 9 pounds
very choice rice for ft; very bast
our, 50 pounds for 1.90.
Among the locals in that issue we
noticed the foliovriug: Our excel
lent young friend. Mr. J. R. Echols,
from near Ila. wn-s in town Wednes
day and made a pleasant call on the
Monitor as he generally does when
in town. We are always glad to see
him.
STOCKHOLDERS •
MEETING
The annual stockholders meeting
of the Bank of Danielsville was held
at their banking house here Wednes
day. The president was not here,
but there was a full attendance of
the officers and stockholders. The
same board of officers were re-elect
ed fo rthe present yyear. A divi
dend of 13 per cent, was declared
and S4OO was harried to the surplus
fund. This is quite a good showing
for the bank and we are pleased to
note it.
