BRAND NOT IN CONGRESS
Attempt* To Mitiead Voter:.
In his speech at Elberton Mr.
Shackelford said:
“Mr. Brand left Athens on the
15th for Washington. Before he
left he sent to all the papers in the
district a news story stab’ Jg that the
minority leader had sent to him n
telegram in the nature of an S, *. S
call saying that it was imperative,
that every congressman be in his
scat; that the Henry Ford pro •> ra
tion was to be called up and < ther
important legislation was to be con
sidered; and that the president
would present the railroad strike
situation to congress. He said that
duty called him to Washington and
that he must respond.
“I charge that Mr. Brand was not
sincere in this. He was simply play
ing politics with the votors of the
district as has been his custom al
ways. He left Athens, it is true,
but he only remained in Washington
one day and immediately came back
to Athens to engage in his cam
paign for reelection.

CARNESVILLE HERALD
BOOSTS SHACKELFORD
it has been the policy or the ID .
aid not to take an active stand iu
political races. We have always been
contented to vote our convictions,
and have always tried to “Sfi:e up”
each candidate and cast our ballot
for the best man. But in the present
congressional race, we wish to express
our hearty endorsement of the candi
dacy of Thos. J. Shackelford.
It is our candid opinion that Col.
Shackelford is eminently qualified
for this important office, and, by
reason of his sincere interest in the
agricultural conditions, he is able to
render the people of this lisfvict
valuable sei*vices, should he be elect
ed to Congi-ess.
t lor practically all his life his ef
forts have been directed along con
structive lines, in helping to make a
better condition among tbs rural
sections, and his I<Torts along these
lines have borne fruit, ft is to 1 e
regretted that Judge Brand started
off with a bitter attack on Col. Shack
elford, in reply to his courteous reply
letter asking Brand to meet him and
discuss the issues. W had hoped that
this campaign could he run without
personal attacks, hut it seems that
.Judge Brand could not refrain front
abusing Shackelford in his. reply
Most of our readers have read both
the letter that Col. Shackelford wrote
to Judge Brand, and the latters reply
so there is no need to quote them,
but there is one thing in Brands reply
we think was carrying things a little
too far, and that was his statement
that Shackelford was ill hied, wnich
is nothing hut a reflection upon the.
dead parents of a good man.
